Doha, Qatar – The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs launched its second annual football championship for departmental employees on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at the Ministry’s stadium in Abu Hamour. The tournament, patronized by Minister H.E. Ghanem bin Shaheen bin Ghanem Al Ghanem, features 20 teams competing for the title and aims to foster teamwork and healthy lifestyles among staff. This initiative underscores the Ministry’s commitment to employee well-being and community engagement.

The opening day saw four group-stage matches take place, with the Financial Affairs Department – Security Section defeating the Legal Affairs Department 2-1, and the Islamic Affairs Department securing a decisive 5-1 victory over the Da’wah and Religious Guidance Department (B). A 2-2 draw between the Engineering Affairs Department and the Zakat Affairs Department highlighted the competitive spirit, while the Islamic Network team edged out the Planning, Quality, and Innovation Department in a close 5-4 contest.

Strengthening Community Through the Ministry Football Championship

The Ministry’s decision to host this football championship aligns with Qatar’s broader national strategy to promote sports participation and a healthy population. According to the Ministry, the event is designed to strengthen bonds between employees from different departments and cultivate a positive work environment. This year’s participation of 20 teams represents an increase from previous iterations, indicating growing enthusiasm for the event.

Employee Perspectives on the Tournament

Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Khalifi of the Legal Affairs Department expressed gratitude for the Minister’s support and commended the Public Relations and Communication Department for the tournament’s organization. He noted the championship embodies Qatar’s “Sport for All” slogan and encourages sportsmanship. Muadh Raad Al Hussein from the Planning, Quality, and Innovation Department highlighted the value of the initiative in fostering familiarity and rapport among colleagues.

The Ministry emphasized that the championship is not solely about athletic competition. It’s also about reinforcing institutional belonging and promoting a culture of physical activity, which the Ministry believes contributes to enhanced job performance. This focus on employee well-being is increasingly recognized as a key factor in organizational success, and initiatives like this are becoming more common across various sectors in Qatar.

The event also supports Qatar National Vision 2030, which prioritizes the development of a well-rounded individual, encompassing both physical and professional capabilities. Investing in employee health and social activities is seen as a crucial component of achieving this vision. The Ministry’s commitment to these values is evident in the careful planning and execution of the football championship.

The tournament’s structure, dividing teams into four groups, ensures a diverse range of matches and opportunities for competition. This format allows for a more equitable distribution of playing time and increases the chances of unexpected outcomes. The upcoming knockout stages are expected to be particularly intense, as teams vie for a place in the final match.

Beyond the immediate benefits to employee morale and health, the sports event also serves as a platform for showcasing the Ministry’s commitment to community engagement. This positive public image can contribute to increased trust and collaboration with other organizations and stakeholders. The Ministry’s proactive approach to social responsibility is a key aspect of its overall strategy.

The championship is scheduled to continue according to the approved schedule, with the knockout stages commencing in the coming weeks. The final match date remains to be announced, dependent on the progress of the teams and any potential scheduling adjustments. Observers will be watching to see which department emerges victorious and how the event continues to evolve in future years, potentially expanding to include other athletic activities.

The Ministry has not yet released detailed statistics on employee participation in sports programs, but the success of this football tournament suggests a growing interest in physical activity among its workforce. Further analysis of participation rates and employee feedback will be crucial in informing future initiatives and maximizing their impact.

The next step involves the completion of the group stage matches, followed by the announcement of the qualifying teams for the knockout rounds. The Ministry will likely provide updates on the tournament’s progress through its official channels, including its website and social media platforms. The outcome of the championship and its long-term effects on employee engagement will be key areas to monitor.
