Algeria advanced to the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Saturday, securing a 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso in Rabat, Morocco. A first-half penalty converted by captain Riyad Mahrez proved to be the decisive goal, solidifying Algeria’s position as a strong contender in the tournament. This win marks a significant step for the Desert Foxes, aiming to recapture their 2019 AFCON title.

The match, played at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium, saw Algeria maintain their perfect record in Group E with six points from two games. Burkina Faso, despite a spirited performance, remains on three points alongside Sudan, setting up a crucial clash between the two nations on Wednesday. Algeria’s qualification is now confirmed regardless of the outcome of their final group stage match against Equatorial Guinea.

Riyad Mahrez Leads Algeria to AFCON Last 16

Mahrez’s penalty, awarded after Rayan Ait-Nouri was fouled, came in the 23rd minute. The Manchester City winger calmly slotted the ball home, adding to his earlier brace in Algeria’s opening 3-0 win against Sudan. This brings his total goal tally at the AFCON to nine, establishing a new Algerian record.

The game was a physical contest, with both teams battling for dominance. Burkina Faso created several opportunities, notably through a header from Pierre Landry Kabore, but Algeria’s defense, led by a strong midfield, held firm. Algeria’s goalkeeper, Luca Zidane, son of French legend Zinedine Zidane, who was in attendance, remained largely untroubled.

A Repeat of Past Encounters Avoided

This victory is a welcome change for Algeria, who suffered a setback against Burkina Faso in the previous AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast. They were forced to come from two goals down to draw 2-2 in that match, ultimately contributing to their group-stage elimination. This result demonstrates a clear improvement in Algeria’s tactical approach and resilience.

Additionally, Algeria’s coach, Vladimir Petkovic, has instilled a defensive solidity that has yet to be breached in this tournament. The team’s ability to control possession and limit Burkina Faso’s attacking threats was key to their success.

Meanwhile, Burkina Faso pushed for an equalizer in the second half, with Ibrahim Maza and Georgi Minoungou both coming close. However, Algeria’s defense remained steadfast, and goalkeeper Koffi was called into action to deny Mohamed Amoura late in the game. The match highlighted the growing competitiveness of African football, with several teams demonstrating tactical sophistication and individual brilliance.

The result places Algeria in a favorable position to potentially top Group E, which could influence their path through the knockout stages. The team’s strong form and the leadership of Riyad Mahrez make them a team to watch in the remainder of the tournament. The Africa Cup of Nations continues to deliver exciting matches and unexpected results.

Looking ahead, Algeria will face Equatorial Guinea in their final group stage match. While qualification is secured, the outcome will determine their seeding for the knockout rounds. Burkina Faso and Sudan will play a pivotal match on Wednesday, with the winner joining Algeria in the last 16. The tournament’s progression will depend on the results of these remaining group stage fixtures and the form of key players like Mahrez as the competition intensifies.
