RAK Hospital recently hosted an event in honor of World Heart Day, focusing on training community members to become first responders during cardiac emergencies. The initiative aimed to increase awareness about the importance of immediate CPR, which can significantly improve the chances of survival for individuals experiencing a cardiac arrest outside a hospital. With statistics showing that 9 out of 10 people in such situations do not survive, the training provided essential skills and knowledge to empower participants to act quickly and effectively.

The Heart Health Awareness event featured a variety of activities, including Basic First-Aid Training, which covered essential techniques like CPR and proper responses to cardiac emergencies. These hands-on trainings are crucial for individuals wanting to make a difference in life-threatening situations. Dr. Adil Rizvi, Medical Director and Consultant- Cardiothoracic Surgeon at RAK Hospital, gave an insightful presentation on the importance of maintaining heart health, discussing key risk factors and preventive measures. He emphasized the significance of regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, and monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol levels regularly.

Nutritionist Ruba El Hourani shared practical tips for heart-healthy diets at the event, advising attendees to include more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins in their meals while reducing saturated fats, sodium, and added sugars. She highlighted the benefits of healthy fats and recommended cooking with herbs and spices instead of salt. Participants also participated in an interactive quiz to test their knowledge of heart health, and some received complimentary electrocardiogram (ECG) screenings for early detection of potential heart issues.

Dr. Raza Siddiqui, Executive Director of RAK Hospital, reiterated the importance of empowering community members with the knowledge and skills to act decisively in emergencies. He emphasized the need for individuals to recognize distress signals and respond effectively with first aid and CPR until professional help arrives. Given that timely first aid can prevent 80% of deaths from injuries, and proper emergency response can reduce recovery times significantly, this initiative is particularly valuable in a region where cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death.

In a region where lifestyle factors, sedentary behavior, and rising rates of obesity and diabetes contribute to a growing incidence of heart disease, this initiative is crucial. As cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the area, empowering community members with lifesaving skills and knowledge can make a significant impact on reducing mortality rates. By fostering a culture of preparedness and ensuring that individuals are equipped to respond effectively in cardiac emergencies, initiatives like the one hosted by RAK Hospital on World Heart Day play a crucial role in saving lives and improving overall community health.
