Doha, Qatar – Formula 1 rookie Isack Hadjar views the Qatar Grand Prix as a unique opportunity, feeling a strong connection to the region that almost feels like a home race. The Racing Bulls driver, enjoying a successful debut season, is currently ninth in the Drivers’ Championship with 51 points and hopes to continue his impressive form at the Lusail International Circuit. This weekend marks the penultimate round of the 2024 season and the final Middle Eastern stop on the calendar.

The Qatar Grand Prix, held at the technologically advanced Lusail Circuit, presents a challenging layout for drivers. Hadjar, who has raced in Qatar previously in other series, is familiar with the track and the conditions. He’s aiming to build on a recent sixth-place finish in Las Vegas and potentially challenge for another podium.

Isack Hadjar Finds a Home Away From Home in Qatar

Hadjar, born in Paris, has developed a significant affinity for Qatar and the broader Middle East. He explained to media that his parents regularly attend races in the region, something they don’t always do for events further afield. This personal connection, combined with his Algerian, Syrian, and Moroccan heritage, makes racing in Qatar particularly meaningful for the 21-year-old.

Additionally, Hadjar highlighted the quality of training facilities available in Qatar, stating they are among the best in the world. He has visited the country on multiple occasions, not only for motorsport but also for football and general training camps, further solidifying his positive impression of the nation.

A Breakthrough Season for the F1 Rookie

The young driver’s ascent to Formula 1 has been rapid, progressing through the Red Bull Junior Team program. He secured a historic podium finish at the Dutch Grand Prix in August, placing third behind Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri. This achievement came sooner than expected, according to Hadjar, and has significantly boosted his confidence.

Hadjar described the initial months in Formula 1 as “surreal,” but emphasized his quick adaptation to the demands of the sport. He acknowledges the journey from karting to the pinnacle of motorsport is remarkable and is proud of his performance thus far. The experience gained throughout the 2024 season is proving invaluable as he looks to establish himself as a consistent contender.

The driver hopes his success will inspire a new generation of motorsport enthusiasts in North Africa and the Middle East. He believes increased visibility can create more opportunities for young people in the region to pursue their racing dreams. This sentiment aligns with Formula 1’s broader efforts to expand its global fanbase and promote diversity within the sport.

The weekend schedule includes practice sessions and sprint qualifying on Friday, followed by the F1 Sprint Race on Saturday. The main event, a 57-lap Qatar Grand Prix, is scheduled for Sunday. Hadjar is focused on maximizing his performance throughout the weekend and impressing the local fans.

Looking ahead, Hadjar acknowledges the uncertainty surrounding the 2025 season. He plans to concentrate on his own development, maintaining consistency, and making steady progress. The performance of the Racing Bulls team, and any potential changes to the car, will be key factors influencing his prospects. The next step will be to see how he performs in the sprint race and main event this weekend, and how that impacts his overall standing in the Drivers’ Championship.

The future of the Qatar Grand Prix on the F1 calendar remains a topic of discussion, with contract negotiations ongoing. Any decisions regarding the long-term presence of the race will be closely watched by teams and fans alike, as it represents an important market for the sport. The ongoing development of the Lusail Circuit and the increasing popularity of Formula 1 in the region suggest a continued partnership is likely.

Beyond the racing, the event also provides a platform for showcasing Qatar’s infrastructure and hospitality to a global audience. This contributes to the country’s broader tourism and economic diversification goals. The FIA and Formula 1 management are also focused on sustainability initiatives at the event, aligning with the sport’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact.
