Authorities Warn Against Stopping in the Road After Multi-Vehicle Collision

Dubai Police General Command warned drivers about the dangers of stopping in the road after a vehicle malfunction caused a serious collision on Jebel Ali Road. According to officials, stopping in the road due to a vehicle breakdown can lead to severe crashes, injuries and fatalities, and carries a fine of AED 1,000 plus six black points under local traffic rules.

The warning follows a crash in which a bus stalled unexpectedly in the middle of Jebel Ali Road, triggering a rear-end collision involving three buses and a private car that left 25 people injured. Brigadier Essam Ibrahim Al Awar, acting director of the General Department of Traffic, urged drivers to prioritize roadside safety and to contact police immediately if they cannot move their vehicle off the carriageway.

Legal Penalties and Enforcement: Stopping in the Road

Stopping in the road is classified as a high-risk traffic violation under Dubai regulations. The Dubai Police General Command confirmed that drivers found stopping their vehicles in the carriageway will face a fine of AED 1,000 and six black points. In addition, Article 98, which addresses obstruction of traffic, may be applied and carries a fine of AED 500, officials said.

Furthermore, authorities stressed that penalties form part of a broader enforcement strategy aimed at reducing preventable crashes caused by inattentive driving and illegal roadside stoppages. Therefore, drivers should be aware that enforcement teams and traffic patrols will continue to monitor key routes and act to secure scenes where vehicles obstruct traffic.

What Happened on Jebel Ali Road and Immediate Response

Police said the incident began when a bus experienced a sudden mechanical failure and stopped in the middle of the road. As a result, two other buses and a private vehicle were unable to avoid the stalled vehicle and collided with it from behind. The crash resulted in 25 people sustaining injuries ranging from minor to serious, and they were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

According to Brig. Al Awar, the Operations Department’s command and control center received the alert and deployed crash investigators from the Traffic Accidents Section together with patrols from Jebel Ali Police Station. Investigators collected evidence, documented the scene and coordinated with traffic units to restore normal traffic flow, while rescue teams attended to the injured.

Safety Measures After a Breakdown and Roadside Safety Tips

Officials outlined clear precautions drivers should take if their vehicle suffers a vehicle breakdown and cannot be moved off the road. First, activate hazard lights to warn approaching traffic and, if available, use the vehicle’s warning triangle placed at a safe distance behind the vehicle. Secondly, prioritize the safety of occupants by moving everyone well away from the carriageway, if conditions permit.

Additionally, drivers were advised to call police immediately rather than attempting risky repairs on the road. Police patrols can secure the scene, provide direction to approaching traffic, and arrange for vehicle recovery. These roadside safety steps are intended to reduce secondary collisions and protect both occupants and other road users.

Investigation, Evidence Collection and Traffic Management

Traffic investigators from the Dubai Police said they conducted a full scene inspection to determine contributing factors, such as vehicle condition, driver attention and adherence to traffic rules. Evidence gathering included photographing the scene, examining vehicle positions, and interviewing drivers and witnesses. Meanwhile, traffic patrols organized diversion and managed traffic flow to allow rescue vehicles to reach the crash site promptly.

Authorities reiterated that proper pre-trip vehicle checks—ensuring tires, fuel levels, brakes and lights are in good condition—can prevent many on-road failures. Therefore, routine maintenance and quick response to dashboard warnings remain key elements of crash prevention.

Public Guidance and Ongoing Safety Campaigns

Dubai Police officials said the recent collision underscores the need for continued public awareness on safe driving practices and how to respond to vehicle breakdowns. The department indicated that targeted awareness campaigns and enforcement operations will remain a priority to reduce incidents caused by inattentive driving and unsafe stopping.

Related traffic fines Dubai motorists should note include the AED 1,000 penalty for stopping in the road and the AED 500 fine for obstructing traffic under Article 98. These measures are part of a legal framework aimed at discouraging risky roadside behavior and improving overall road safety.

Advice for Fleet Operators and Bus Companies

Fleet operators and public transport providers were reminded to ensure regular maintenance and immediate reporting procedures for any technical faults. In contrast to on-the-spot repairs in traffic, companies should provide training on emergency protocols and passenger evacuation to minimize harm when buses or other large vehicles experience mechanical issues.

Conclusion: What to Watch Next

Investigations into the Jebel Ali Road collision are ongoing, and Dubai Police said further findings will be released as they become available. Meanwhile, motorists should heed the safety guidance issued by police: perform pre-trip checks, avoid stopping in the road if possible, use hazard signals and warning triangles, and contact authorities when a vehicle cannot be moved. Going forward, drivers and transport operators alike should watch for updated guidance and enforcement notices from Dubai Police as the inquiry proceeds.
