Following the release of the Georgian election results, MP Maka Botchorishvili of the ruling Georgian Dream party addressed claims of irregularities in an interview with Euronews. The party claimed victory with 53.92% of the vote, but opposition parties quickly disputed the results, alleging that the election was rigged. Despite reports of violations such as intimidation and interference, Botchorishvili defended the fairness of the election process, stating that all conditions for competitiveness were met, allowing citizens the freedom to elect their preferred candidates.

Botchorishvili highlighted that electronic scanners were used at polling stations for the first time to safeguard election results and minimize speculations. The implementation of this technology was seen as a step towards ensuring transparency in the electoral process. The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) deployed hundreds of observers across the country to monitor the election environment and procedures. While incidents were flagged by the observers, Botchorishvili emphasized the need for concrete examples to address any potential issues.

Looking towards the future, Botchorishvili expressed the ruling party’s commitment to progressing on the European path peacefully and with dignity. Georgia’s accession path to the European Union had been frozen previously due to laws initiated by the ruling party that were deemed incompatible with European values, such as the “foreign agent” rule. Botchorishvili clarified that the law is centered around transparency and ensuring a stable democratic development in Georgia to secure its European future, emphasizing that transparency is essential for progress.

In response to inquiries about improving the relationship with the EU, especially regarding these incompatible laws, Botchorishvili assured that the ruling party is prepared to demonstrate that the legislation’s objective is to inform the Georgian society and maintain political transparency. She stressed the importance of stable democratic development in Georgia for its European future, noting that transparency would facilitate progress rather than hinder it. The ruling party aims to implement promised reforms for economic development and better conditions for citizens as they continue on the European path.

Botchorishvili’s comments come amidst a backdrop of political tension in Georgia following the election results, with opposition parties raising concerns about the integrity of the electoral process. While the ruling party celebrates its victory, addressing these concerns and fostering dialogue with all political actors will be crucial for ensuring a peaceful and inclusive democratic transition. As Georgia navigates its path towards the European Union, a commitment to transparency, democratic values, and constructive engagement with EU partners will be essential for building a strong and sustainable relationship.
