The Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University recently wrapped up its eighth annual Summer Research Program (SRP) with a commendation ceremony. The program, which ran from May 19 to July 18, included 14 undergraduate students from prestigious institutions like Qatar University, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, and the University of Calgary in Qatar. Participants had the opportunity to work closely with leading scientists in QBRI’s cutting-edge laboratories, focusing on research projects in areas such as diabetes, cancer, and neurological disorders.

Aside from laboratory work, students engaged in professional development activities and workshops designed to enhance their skills in data presentation, experimental design, scientific paper writing, reproducibility, and open science. This holistic approach ensured that participants gained a well-rounded and immersive learning experience. Gana Alnajjar from CMU-Q expressed her gratitude for the program’s transformative effect on her understanding of the field, while Eman Alijla from QU appreciated the support and resources provided.

Dr. Omar Albagha, Acting Executive Director of QBRI, emphasized the program’s importance in fostering the next generation of researchers. By equipping students with essential skills and practical experience, QBRI aims to nurture their personal and professional growth while exposing them to the diverse career opportunities available in the field of biomedical science. The success of the SRP highlights QBRI’s commitment to capacity building and inspiring future generations to pursue research in the biomedical field.

Overall, the Summer Research Program at QBRI has proven to be a valuable platform for undergraduate students to immerse themselves in the world of biomedical research, under the guidance of experienced scientists. With a focus on hands-on experience and professional development, participants in the program have the opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge in key research areas. The positive feedback from students like Gana Alnajjar and Eman Alijla reflects the program’s impact in shaping their academic journey and preparing them for future career opportunities in the field.

As a leader in biomedical research, QBRI’s commitment to fostering talent and innovation through programs like the SRP is evident in the success of its participants and the overall growth of the research institute. By providing students with a comprehensive and immersive research experience, QBRI is not only contributing to their academic and professional development but also inspiring them to explore the vast possibilities in the field of biomedical science. With a continued focus on capacity building and skills development, QBRI remains dedicated to shaping the next generation of researchers and innovators in Qatar and beyond.
