Post-partum recovery is a crucial period for new mothers, and the time it takes to heal varies depending on the type of delivery they have had. Women who undergo C-sections may require a longer recovery period compared to those who have a natural birth. To support new mothers in their physical and mental recovery, the Abu Dhabi government has introduced a three-month maternity leave for Emirati women working in the private sector. This initiative aims to promote healthier and happier families by prioritizing the well-being of mothers.

Extended maternity leave is beneficial for mothers to fully recover before returning to work. In the UAE, working women typically receive a 60-day maternity leave, with 45 days being fully paid and 15 days half-paid. Dr. Tahira Mahboob, an Obstetrics & Gynaecologist, emphasized the importance of a longer recovery period for physical healing, especially for those who have had complications or a caesarean section. This extended leave offers flexibility for new mothers to adjust to their new parenting responsibilities without the immediate pressure of returning to work.

Physical challenges during the post-partum period can vary for new mothers. Common symptoms include perineal pain, vaginal bleeding, fatigue, haemorrhoids, and urinary incontinence for women who have had vaginal births. Those who undergo caesarean sections may experience prolonged recovery periods with issues such as incision pain and reduced mobility. Dr. Insha Khan, a Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, highlighted that full recovery from childbirth can take several months, especially in the case of complications.

Mental well-being is equally important during the post-partum phase, as it can greatly impact a mother’s overall health and recovery. Dr. Mahboob stressed the need for new mothers to address any emotional or psychological challenges they may face. Dr. Summia Zaher, a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, emphasized the importance of recognizing emotional changes post-delivery, such as the ‘baby blues,’ and seeking professional help if needed. Abu Dhabi’s extended maternity leave has been praised by experts for reducing stress, enhancing mental health, and promoting breastfeeding, ultimately benefiting both mothers and children.

Dr. Zofia Gordon, a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, highlighted the positive impact of extended maternity leave in supporting mothers’ mental health while also encouraging shared parenting responsibilities. The UAE also recognizes the importance of fathers’ involvement in supporting their families, granting male employees five days of paternity leave. Dr. Gordon emphasized the crucial role of supportive fathers during the post-partum phase, as they can provide emotional assistance, share baby care responsibilities, and create a nurturing environment for the family.

Inadequate recovery time can have long-term consequences for mothers, potentially leading to chronic fatigue, unresolved physical problems, and difficulties in bonding with the baby. Allowing mothers sufficient time to heal is essential for enhancing the well-being of the entire family. By prioritizing the physical and mental recovery of new mothers through extended maternity leave, Abu Dhabi’s initiative aims to support healthier and happier families, ultimately creating a more nurturing environment for both parents and children.
