Incense burning is a common practice among UAE locals and expats, but medical experts warn of potential health risks associated with it. The smoke emitted from incense can trigger allergic reactions in the eyes, nose, throat, and skin. A study conducted by NYUAD revealed that incense use is linked to changes in the oral microbiota, which can impact oral health. The study collected mouthwash samples from 303 Emirati adults to assess the oral microbiota and its correlation with incense burning.

The findings of the study suggested that incense burning may lead to a decrease in beneficial bacteria in the mouth, potentially increasing harmful bacteria that contribute to conditions like cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Researchers highlighted the importance of increasing awareness about the health implications of incense use and the lack of policies to regulate its use, especially in public spaces. Incense burning has been a traditional practice in the East for various purposes, but its potential health risks need to be taken into consideration.

Incense smoke contains irritants that can cause allergic reactions in different parts of the body, leading to respiratory symptoms like asthma, cough, and wheezing. Dr. Sandeep Pargi, a specialist pulmonologist, highlighted the association between incense smoke and cardiovascular conditions, emphasizing the need to reduce exposure to incense smoke to lower the risks. Dr. Firas Osman, a specialist in Oral & Maxillofacial surgery, advised against inhaling burned essential oils from incense and recommended opening windows to reduce exposure to smoke.

Healthcare professionals underscored the importance of oral health in determining overall health, as poor oral health can contribute to systemic health issues like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections. Dr. Muhammad Yousaf Jan, a Specialist Internal Medicine at Zulekha Hospital Dubai, emphasized the importance of maintaining oral health to reduce the risk of introducing harmful bacteria into the respiratory system. While high-quality natural incense poses minimal health risks when used in moderation, it is essential to be mindful of the potential health implications of incense burning.
