Dr. Mansour Ali, Chair of the Department of Surgery at Sidra Medicine, has been actively involved in providing specialist paediatric humanitarian care through medical missions in countries facing critical needs. These missions are often in collaboration with local and international charitable organizations to bring specialized medical expertise to underserved communities. In the annual report of Sidra Medicine, experts were lauded for their efforts in countries like Syria, Bangladesh, Jordan, and Mauritania, where life-saving surgeries were performed on children with various conditions. Dr. Ali has partnered with Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) on several missions to countries like Bangladesh, Sudan, and Syria, where he performed specialist paediatric surgeries.

During these medical missions, Dr. Ali highlighted the importance of having pediatric specialists, especially in areas impacted by war, natural disasters, or refugee crises. He explained that children require a pediatric surgeon trained to use equipment and facilities specifically designed for them, as well as to treat unique and rare conditions that demand specialist surgical skills. Dr. Ali has been performing a range of general and complex surgeries during these missions, including esophagus repairs, abdominal surgeries, neonatal congenital anomalies, trauma injuries, and minimally invasive techniques like robotic surgery. These procedures are often carried out in make-shift or old hospitals that lack resources in terms of medical supplies, technologies, and clinical expertise.

In addition to performing surgeries, Dr. Ali and his team also focus on teaching clinical teams on the ground about life-saving techniques and procedures, enabling them to continue caring for the children once the mission is completed. He emphasized the impact of these missions, both on the lives of the children who undergo surgery and their families. Dr. Ali expressed his gratitude for being able to play a small role in saving lives and training other doctors through these missions. He described the experience as humbling and life-changing, as he witnesses the transformation in the families of the children who receive medical care.

Dr. Ali shared his plans for future medical missions, including a follow-up visit to Syria, where he intends to assemble a team of specialists in urology, trauma surgery, ENT, and spinal surgery. These missions not only provide life-saving surgeries but also contribute to the professional development of local clinical teams by allowing them to learn from some of the best doctors in the industry. The impact of these missions extends beyond the medical procedures, bringing relief and smiles to the faces of children and their families, and instilling a sense of satisfaction in Dr. Ali for being able to use his skills to make a difference in the lives of others. The compassionate and dedicated efforts of Dr. Ali and his team exemplify the spirit of humanitarian care and support that transcends borders.
