West Indies struggled on the second day of the first test against England, ending the day at 79-6 and trailing by 171 runs. Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Jamie Smith scored half-centuries to lift England to a total of 371. James Anderson, playing his final test match, bowled Windies captain Kraigg Brathwaite with a fine delivery. The Windies batting lineup collapsed, with only a battling partnership between Alick Athanaze and Jason Holder helping the game go into a third day. Anderson dismissed Athanaze and Gus Atkinson claimed Holder on the final ball of the day.

In the morning session, Brook reached his 12th fifty in 13 tests before getting out to Alzarri Joseph. Ben Stokes was bowled by Gudakesh Motie for four, while Root was dismissed by Motie for 68. Debutant Jamie Smith showcased his potential with a quick-fire innings, hitting two big sixes and eight fours in the sunshine. Smith expressed his joy at playing for England and being able to contribute to the team’s strong start to the summer.

Anderson, in his final test innings, did not face a ball but made an impact with the ball, breaching Brathwaite’s defences early on. Stokes reached a milestone by becoming only the third player to take 200 wickets and score 6,000 runs in tests. The England bowlers, led by Stokes and Anderson, dominated the Windies batting lineup, putting them under immense pressure. Windies player Jayden Seales acknowledged the team’s mistakes and emphasized the need to learn from them and move forward.

With Anderson’s retirement looming, England is in a strong position in the first test against the West Indies. Anderson’s experience and skill with the ball have been pivotal in dismantling the Windies batting lineup. Young players like Jamie Smith have stepped up and showcased their potential, providing hope for the future of English cricket. The Windies, on the other hand, need to regroup and learn from their mistakes to avoid a heavy defeat in the remaining days of the test match. Overall, the first test has set the stage for an exciting and competitive series between England and the West Indies.
