The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has launched a pilot operation for AI-assisted automated detection of damage to the right-of-way on Dubai’s roads. This operation also includes the inspection of traffic diversions. The RTA is using artificial intelligence to monitor and track the performance of thousands of public utility vehicles and their drivers. As part of this initiative, 7,200 vehicles and 14,500 drivers are now covered by the smart system implemented by the Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC), a division of the RTA.

The DTC control centre’s AI capabilities help gauge public transport demand and assist the authority in determining which areas are in need of taxis and public vehicles. Dubai’s traffic management is handled through the Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Center at Al Barsha, one of the largest and most sophisticated traffic control centers globally. The center utilizes innovative technologies and traffic management systems to make Dubai one of the world’s leading cities in Intelligent Traffic Systems, alongside Singapore and Seoul.

The Dubai ITS Centre is a crucial hub for managing traffic in Dubai, using an integrated technology platform that incorporates artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things, advanced communication systems, and monitoring devices. It features an advanced traffic control system called “iTraffic” enhanced by AI technologies and big data analysis tools to support decision-making. Abu Dhabi also employs AI-based systems to assess crash data, improve road infrastructure, enhance accident response times, and detect traffic violations. The use of smart technologies has helped reduce offenses and make the roads safer in Abu Dhabi by enabling swift emergency response.

Four years ago, Abu Dhabi Police introduced the Safe City Project utilizing AI and cutting-edge technologies in all areas of operations. These advancements and developments in robotics and AI have played a significant role in enhancing traffic safety for road users in Abu Dhabi. The integration of AI systems has improved the overall efficiency of traffic management and accident response across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. These smart technologies have proven to be effective in reducing offenses and ensuring a safer driving environment for residents and visitors in both emirates. The adoption of AI in traffic management is a positive step towards achieving a smoother and more efficient transportation system in the UAE.
