The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has awarded four road development contracts worth SR13 billion ($3.46 billion) as part of the first phase of the program to enhance the capital city’s transport network. The Board of Directors of the commission announced that the first phase aims to develop the axes of the main and rings roads and link them to provide sustainable transport and logistics services. This initiative is in line with Vision 2030’s objectives to position Riyadh as one of the world’s major cities and prepare it to be a major center for providing sustainable transportation and logistics services in the Middle East region. Contracts for subsequent phases of the program will be announced in the coming period.

The projects under the first group of the program include the construction of the second southern ring road, building two bridges parallel to the Wadi Laban Suspension Bridge and developing the intersection of the western ring road with Jeddah Road, implementation of the project to develop the western part of Al-Thumama Road Axis, and the extension of Taif Road in the Laban neighborhood to the Qiddiya project. These projects aim to enhance traffic flow and connectivity within the city. In order to manage traffic diversions on these roads during the construction phase, the RCRC has developed a plan in partnership with relevant authorities in the city.

The Riyadh Main Ring Roads Development Program was announced by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is also the chairman of the Board of Directors of RCRC. The first group of projects under this program has already begun, with the implementation and development of over 500 kilometers of the city’s road network. The implementation period of the projects in the first phase is expected to range between 3 to 4 years. The completion of these projects will not only improve the city’s transport network but also contribute to Riyadh’s overall development as a major urban center in the region.

The development of these road projects is crucial for Riyadh’s growth and transformation as a global city. By enhancing the city’s transport network and infrastructure, the projects aim to improve connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and promote sustainable transportation solutions. The implementation of the Riyadh Main Ring Roads Development Program is a significant step towards achieving Vision 2030’s objectives of diversifying the economy and improving the quality of life for residents in the capital city.

The awarding of these road development contracts underscores the Saudi government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure projects that will drive economic growth and development in the country. The projects under the first phase of the program will not only create job opportunities but also stimulate economic activity in the construction and transport sectors. The successful completion of these projects will also enhance Riyadh’s competitiveness as a major business and logistics hub in the Middle East.

As Riyadh continues to expand and urbanize, the development of a modern and efficient transport network is essential to support the city’s growing population and economy. The implementation of the Riyadh Main Ring Roads Development Program will play a key role in achieving this goal by improving traffic flow, reducing travel times, and enhancing connectivity across the city. By investing in sustainable transportation infrastructure, the Saudi government is laying the foundation for Riyadh to become a smart and sustainable city that meets the needs of its residents and businesses for years to come.
