The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism recently organized a mountain hiking event in Wadi Bani Khalid, located in the North Al Sharqiyah Governorate of Oman. Over 150 hikers from various governorates and regions across the country participated in this two-day event, which was part of the executive program for Sur, the Arab Tourism Capital 2024. The main focus of the event was on security and safety in mountain walking activities, educating participants on important aspects of mountain walking and camping, and introducing them to the unique experience provided by the Ministry.

The event kicked off in the water ponds area near the village of “Maqal” in the Wilayat of Wadi Bani Khalid at an altitude of 640 metres. Participants then embarked on a gradual ascent to the highest peak overlooking Wadi Bani Khalid, covering a distance of 4 to 5 kilometres. The journey continued on mountain paths with a moderate ascent until they reached the camping point in the village of Hloot after covering a total distance of 20 kilometres. The height of the area reached about 2050 metres above sea level, providing breathtaking views for the participants.

On the second day of the event, participants set off from the camping area in the village of Hloot towards the Niyabat of Tiwi in the Wilayat of Sur, covering a total distance of 30 kilometres. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism’s interest in adventure activities and reviving the old mountain trails approved by the Ministry is evident through the organization of this event. The Ministry ensures the application of security and safety standards in adventure activities, aiming to enhance the tourism experience in the Sultanate of Oman.

The mountain hiking event also aims to showcase Oman’s diverse geographical nature, geological, cultural, and heritage aspects to participants. By encouraging specialized tourism companies licensed by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism to organize adventure trips on these mountain trails, the event sets the stage for promoting adventure tourism in the Sultanate of Oman. This aligns with the broader goals of promoting sustainable tourism practices and showcasing Oman’s natural beauty and cultural heritage to visitors from around the world.

Overall, the mountain hiking event organized by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in Wadi Bani Khalid serves as a testament to Oman’s commitment to promoting adventure tourism and ensuring the safety of participants in such activities. With its unique geographical features, rich cultural heritage, and diverse landscapes, Oman presents itself as an ideal destination for adventure seekers looking to explore nature and experience the thrill of mountain hiking. Participants of the event were able to enjoy the stunning views, engage in challenging hikes, and learn about the importance of safety and security in mountain walking activities.
