Doha recently hosted the two-day meeting of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA)’s Standing Committee on Budget and Planning, which was chaired by Shura Council Member and APA Vice-President H E Eng. Ahmed bin Hitmi Al Hitmi. The attendees approved equal subscriptions for all member states and a proposal to amend some provisions of the APA’s statute to move to majority instead of unanimity vote on draft resolutions, with each APA member state given one vote. These draft amendments are set to be submitted to the APA Executive Council before being presented for approval at the upcoming APA Assembly in February in Baku.

During their visit to the Shura Council headquarters, the participating delegations were given an overview of the council’s work and also had the opportunity to explore the Shura Council exhibition, showcasing its history since its establishment. The meeting was also attended by Shura Council Member and Qatari-Asian Parliamentary Friendship Group Member H E Essa bin Ahmad Al Nassr and Shura Council Member H E Omair bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, highlighting the importance of collaboration and cooperation among member states.

The proposed amendments aim to streamline the decision-making process within the APA and make it more efficient by moving towards a majority vote system on draft resolutions. This change would ensure that each member state has an equal say in the decision-making process and promotes transparency and fairness within the organization. By approving equal subscriptions for all member states, the APA is taking steps towards strengthening unity and solidarity among member countries.

The upcoming APA Assembly in February in Baku will be a crucial event where the draft amendments will be presented for approval. The success of these amendments will further enhance the APA’s work and cooperation among member states. The active participation of member states in meetings and discussions, as seen in the recent meeting in Doha, reflects a commitment to the APA’s goals and objectives in promoting peace, security, and sustainable development in the region.

Overall, the recent meeting of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly’s Standing Committee on Budget and Planning in Doha was a significant step towards enhancing cooperation and decision-making within the organization. The approved amendments to the APA’s statute and the equal subscriptions for all member states demonstrate a commitment to fairness and transparency in the decision-making process. With the upcoming APA Assembly in February in Baku, the member states have an opportunity to further strengthen their collaboration and work towards common goals for the benefit of the entire region.
