The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and Bahrain’s Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture are collaborating on the ‘Buthoor Al Bahrain’ campaign, aiming at sustainable urban development in Bahrain. The initiative focuses on increasing vegetation cover, combating climate change, and improving the quality of life for residents in the kingdom. The campaign engages with communities, raises environmental awareness, distributes saplings, and encourages community involvement in caring for green spaces. This initiative is conducted in partnership with municipal councils and has the support of the Capital Municipality and three other local municipalities.

The ‘Buthoor Al Bahrain’ team recently visited key locations such as Arad Doha Park, Barbar Park, A’ali Walkway, and Busaiteen Garden, interacting with residents to stress the importance of preserving and enhancing public green spaces. Dr. Sayed Shubbar Al-Wadaei, Chairman of the Northern Municipal Council, commended the campaign for its impact on raising environmental consciousness. He highlighted the successful distribution of saplings at Barbar Park and mentioned that the campaign would continue its efforts across the Northern Governorate. The council will maintain its collaboration with the campaign, working with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to achieve sustainable development goals in the region.

Dr. Fernanda Lonardoni, Head of the UN-Habitat Programme in Bahrain, emphasized the campaign’s broader vision of promoting sustainable urban living and environmental responsibility. By connecting with grassroots communities, the campaign aims to foster sustainable urban environments through simple acts like distributing trees. Aligned with Bahrain’s National Afforestation Plan, which targets to double the number of trees by 2035, the ‘Seeds of Bahrain’ initiative continues to support the kingdom’s environmental objectives. The campaign will visit various parks and public spaces across Bahrain in the coming months, encouraging residents to participate in greening efforts.

The ‘Seeds of Bahrain’ campaign is not just about planting trees; it signifies a long-term commitment to creating a healthier, more sustainable Bahrain for future generations. The initiative focuses on engaging citizens and residents to play an active role in greening communities, ultimately contributing to a more environmentally conscious and responsible society. By distributing saplings and encouraging community involvement, the campaign seeks to instill a sense of environmental stewardship among residents, fostering a collective effort towards creating sustainable urban environments in Bahrain. Through continued partnerships with municipal councils and international organizations, the campaign aims to achieve significant progress in increasing vegetation cover and combating climate change in the kingdom.
