Doha, Qatar – August George, a bay gelding owned by Sheikh Mohammed Salman Al Thani, captured a thrilling victory in the Al Uqda 2YO Cup at Al Uqda Racecourse yesterday. The race, the centerpiece of an eight-race card, saw August George surge late to win by a head, marking his second win in just four career starts. This prestigious thoroughbred racing event showcased exciting competition and close finishes.

The win for August George, ridden by jockey Alberto Sanna, concluded a day of racing featuring both Thoroughbred and Arabian horse competitions. Qatar’s racing season continues to build momentum, attracting both local and international participants, according to the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC).

August George Secures Al Uqda 2YO Cup in Dramatic Finish

The Al Uqda 2YO Cup, contested over 1300 meters, delivered a captivating spectacle for racing enthusiasts. August George settled into a comfortable position early in the race, tracking the pace set by Zabeel Flower. The gelding demonstrated consistent performance, having previously secured a place in two other races.

As the field approached the final turn, Zoiros briefly took the lead, initiating a challenge that prompted a strong response from August George. Jockey Alberto Sanna urged his mount forward, and August George answered with a decisive acceleration.

A fierce battle unfolded down the home stretch as Silca Blue, also trained by the winning trainer, mounted a strong challenge alongside August George. The two horses were neck and neck, forcing officials to rely on a photo finish to determine the winner. The incredibly tight finish emphasized the competitive nature of horse racing in Qatar.

Ultimately, August George was declared the victor, adding another win to his promising career. Dapper Charm finished a respectable third, further showcasing the depth of talent among young thoroughbreds.

Other Notable Races from the Day

Beyond the Al Uqda 2YO Cup, several other horses impressed at Al Uqda Racecourse. Ruling Master achieved a second consecutive victory in the Thoroughbred Handicap (45–65) over 2200m, demonstrating strong staying power.

Flashy Dark Angel broke her maiden status with a commanding performance in the Thoroughbred Handicap (0–60) over 1200m. Mubkhar Al Shahania secured his second career win in the Local Purebred Arabian Handicap (55–75) over 2200m. Blewburton also celebrated a first victory, claiming the Thoroughbred Handicap (0–85) for 3-year-olds over 2100m after 16 attempts.

Stylish Performer won the Thoroughbred Handicap (75–95) for 3YO+ over 1400m in another photo finish, edging out competitors by a mere nose. Smartman, meanwhile, made a splash on his debut, winning the Al Uqda 2YO Thoroughbreds also over 1300m with a powerful late run.

The frequent use of photo finishes throughout the day underscores the incredibly competitive nature of the races and the fine margins that separate victory and defeat. These close contests contribute to the excitement and draw of Qatar horse racing.

Looking ahead, the QREC is expected to announce the schedule for upcoming races in the coming weeks. Continued focus will be on developing young talent and promoting the sport both domestically and internationally. The performance of these 2-year-old thoroughbreds, like August George, will be closely watched as they progress in their careers and potentially compete in larger stakes races.
