Arab design has a unique cultural significance, as highlighted by Rana Beiruti, the editor of Arab Design Now. She emphasizes that Arab design is deeply rooted in the materials of the land, showcasing a captivating blend of intricate patterns, bold colors, and luxurious materials that reflect the rich artistic traditions of the Arab world. The modern Arab designs are a fusion of tradition and modernity, creating visually stunning and culturally significant spaces that reflect the history of craft and traditional crafts from the region, reimagined through new technologies and perspectives tailored for modern living.

Beiruti also notes that Arab design is not isolated from the international design scene, but rather it is immersed in a melting pot of exchange and cultural influences from around the world. The book, Arab Design Now, covers the works of 74 designers from different countries around the Arab world, reflecting contemporary design trends and including essays and monologues by various designers discussing relevant topics in today’s design world. The book also showcases a blend of cultures within Arab design, reflecting a multicultural approach to design that encompasses influences from various regions and backgrounds.

Looking towards the future, Beiruti sees a positive outlook for Arab design, with increasing support for designers in the Arab world through initiatives like Design Doha. This support provides opportunities for new generations of designers to experiment, showcase their work, and exchange knowledge. The openness to the world and the adoption of new technologies are expected to influence the practice of Arab design, bringing in a new wave of production and innovation that will contribute to the evolution of Arab design in the global design landscape.

Arab Design Now, a beautifully illustrated 360-page book published by Qatar Museums in partnership with Silvana Editoriale, commemorates the central exhibition of the inaugural edition of Design Doha. The book not only showcases the works of Arab designers living in the Arab world but also those residing in different parts of the world. This reflects the multiculturalism of Arab design, highlighting the diverse influences and perspectives that shape the contemporary Arab design scene. Overall, Arab Design Now celebrates the rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions of the Arab world while looking towards a future of innovation and creativity in Arab design.
