England’s opening day of the first Test against the West Indies at Lord’s saw debutant Gus Atkinson steal the spotlight with a sensational performance, overshadowing James Anderson’s farewell. Atkinson took seven wickets, including three in one over, as the West Indies collapsed to 121 all out. The focus leading up to the series had been on Anderson’s last appearance in Test cricket, as he retires with a record-breaking 701 wickets, the most by any fast bowler at that level.

Anderson eventually added to his tally by dismissing last man Jayden Seales, ending the West Indies’ innings. West Indies debutant Mikyle Louis top-scored with 27 as the tourists were dismissed in under 42 overs. England, in reply, were 30-1 at tea after Ben Duckett was caught behind for three. With a relatively inexperienced top-order, the West Indies struggled after losing the toss in overcast conditions.

The England captain, Ben Stokes, chose to field first after winning the toss, allowing Anderson to make an immediate impact. Despite a solid new-ball spell, Anderson was unable to get past West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite and opener Mikyle Louis early on. The West Indies’ inexperienced batting line-up, with players like Kirk McKenzie and Alick Athanaze, struggled to cope under pressure, adding to their difficulties after losing the toss.

The first Test at Lord’s was set to be significant for Anderson, but Atkinson’s standout performance with the ball shifted the focus. Atkinson’s seven-wicket haul included key wickets that dismantled the West Indies’ batting line-up, showcasing his potential as a future star for England. As the West Indies crumbled under pressure, England capitalized on the favorable conditions, setting themselves up for a solid reply with the bat.

In conclusion, the opening day of the first Test between England and the West Indies saw a mix of emotions, with Anderson bidding farewell while Atkinson made a spectacular debut. The West Indies’ struggles against England’s bowling attack highlighted the challenges faced by their inexperienced line-up. With England off to a solid start in the game, the stage is set for an exciting and competitive series between two strong cricketing nations.
