Al Hilal made history with the signing of Saudi international left-back Muteb Al Harbi from Al Shabab, making him the most expensive Saudi player ever. The 24-year-old signed a five-year contract with the Riyadh giants, extending until 2029. As part of the deal, Al Hilal also sent midfielder Musab Al Juwayr to Al Shabab on a one-season loan. The agreement, which cost approximately SR123 million, saw Al Hilal beat out fierce competition from Al Ahli and Al Nassr to secure Al Harbi’s services. Despite advanced negotiations between Al Nassr and Al Harbi, Al Hilal swooped in at the last minute to finalize the transfer.

Initially, it seemed that Al Nassr was close to signing Al Harbi for SR 93 million, surpassing other offers. However, Al Hilal’s higher financial offer and loan of Musab Al Juwayr convinced Al Shabab to switch sides and finalize the deal with Al Hilal. The transfer marked a significant moment in Saudi football, with Al Hilal securing the most expensive deal in the history of the sport in the country. Al Nassr expressed disappointment over the outcome, detailing the lengthy negotiations and efforts made to reach an agreement. Despite preparing contracts and sharing them with Al Shabab, the sudden change in terms and increased transfer fee led to the collapse of the deal.

Al Shabab president Mohammed Al Munajem defended the club’s decision, emphasizing that prioritizing the club’s best interests led to achieving the biggest deal in Saudi football history. Al Harbi, who had originally agreed to extend his contract with Al Shabab until 2026, will now join Al Hilal in a historic move for Saudi football. The signing of Al Harbi brought dramatic developments in the early hours of Sunday, as clubs competed fiercely to secure his services. Al Hilal ultimately emerged victorious, celebrating the signing on social media with the message: “Wake up MUTEB.. it’s the blue call.” The Riyadh giants secured their target despite facing stiff competition from other clubs, making a significant statement with the record-breaking transfer.
