LOS ANGELES — Leonardo DiCaprio’s new film, One Battle After Another, is emerging as a frontrunner in the upcoming awards season, receiving nine Golden Globe nominations on Monday. The nominations signal the start of a competitive period for the film industry, with One Battle After Another leading the pack in several key categories. The Golden Globes are considered a significant indicator of potential success at the Academy Awards.
The film, a drama centered on the kidnapping of a former revolutionary’s daughter, is nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. DiCaprio himself is recognized in the Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama category, alongside his co-stars Sean Penn, Teyana Taylor, Benicio Del Toro, and Chase Infiniti, who all received acting nominations.
Golden Globe Nominations: A Strong Start to Awards Season
The Golden Globe Awards, presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, honor outstanding achievements in both American and international film and television. This year’s nominations showcase a diverse range of films, with Sentimental Value, a multi-language family drama, closely following One Battle After Another with eight nominations.
Other notable film nominations include Sinners with seven nods, and Hamnet, an adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, with six. Despite its commercial success, Wicked: For Good did not receive a nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, though it remains in contention for the new box office achievement award.
Key Acting Nominees
Beyond DiCaprio and Penn, the acting categories are filled with acclaimed performers. Dwayne Johnson, Timothée Chalamet, Cynthia Erivo, and Ariana Grande all received nominations for their respective roles. Chalamet’s nomination is for his portrayal of a table tennis player in the sports biopic, Marty Supreme.
Notably, George Clooney secured his 14th Golden Globe nomination for Jay Kelly, a film about an aging actor confronting his life choices, with co-star Adam Sandler also receiving a supporting actor nod. Emma Stone is recognized for her work in the conspiracy theory black comedy, Bugonia, alongside Jesse Plemons.
The awards also highlight international cinema. Iranian director Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just An Accident, a revenge drama, earned four nominations. Films like The Secret Agent and No Other Choice also garnered recognition, demonstrating a growing appreciation for global storytelling. This year’s nominations show a strong trend in international film recognition.
Television Categories See British Success
The Golden Globes also celebrate television, and British drama Adolescence is making waves. The series received four acting nominations for Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper, Erin Doherty, and Ashley Walters, and is a contender for Best Limited Series.
The White Lotus leads the television nominations with six, including Best Television Series – Drama, and acting nods for Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, and Aimee Lee Wood. Other dramas in the running include The Pitt, The Diplomat, Pluribus, Severance, and Slow Horses.
Several actors received multiple nominations this year. Amanda Seyfried is recognized for both a TV series, Long Bright River, and a film, The Testament of Ann Lee. Saltburn star Jacob Elordi is up for Best Supporting Actor for Frankenstein and Best Actor in a Limited TV Series for The Narrow Road to the Deep North. Jeremy Allen White also has two nominations, for his roles in the biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere and the hit show The Bear.
The ceremony, to be hosted by Nikki Glaser for the second consecutive year, will take place on January 11th in Los Angeles. The Golden Globes are a crucial stepping stone towards the Oscars, which will be held in March. While One Battle After Another currently holds a strong position, the awards season is notoriously unpredictable.
The ultimate winners remain to be seen, and the coming months will likely see shifts in momentum as various guilds and critics’ associations announce their own awards. The focus will now turn to campaigning and further critical assessment of the nominated works as the industry anticipates the final results.
