Flu cases have been surging across Europe post-holiday season, affecting people of all ages but hitting children under 15 and adults over 60 the hardest. Hospitals in countries like France, Spain, Hungary, and Romania are reporting a significant increase in admissions, with the dominant strain this season being influenza B. To handle the rising number of patients, hospitals are setting up temporary units to alleviate the strain on emergency departments. Elderly patients are at a higher risk for severe respiratory complications, emphasizing the importance of getting vaccinated.

In France, Dr. Jean-Luc Leymarie, a general practitioner, expressed his concern about the severity of the epidemic, stating that it has been a long time since he has seen such a major outbreak. Dr. Olivier Lucidarme also highlighted that the majority of severe cases involve people who are unvaccinated, underscoring the critical role of flu vaccines in preventing severe flu-related complications. Meanwhile, in Spain, regions like Catalonia and Valencia are feeling overwhelmed by the influx of influenza cases, prompting hospitals to prepare for an expected peak in the coming week.

Hungary is also reporting a rise in flu cases, leading to the implementation of stricter health measures in clinics in Budapest and other regions. Mandatory mask-wearing and visitor bans are being enforced to help control the spread of the virus. Similarly, in Romania, over 4,100 cases were recorded last week, with four deaths linked to flu complications. Health officials are warning of a further rise in cases as schools reopen and are recommending vaccination as the most effective prevention method.

Despite the challenges posed by the flu outbreak, medical experts stress that it is not too late to get vaccinated. In Romania alone, over 1.1 million flu vaccines have been administered this season, with a nasal spray vaccine offering a needle-free option for children aged 2-18. Immunity typically develops within two weeks of receiving the vaccine. As Europe battles this seasonal epidemic, citizens are urged to take precautions, including vaccination, to help mitigate the impact of the flu and protect themselves and their communities.
