Sharjah, UAE – Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Family and Community Council, recently honored 680 young individuals as winners of the fifth edition of the Sheikh Sultan Award for Celebrating the Spirit of Youth. The ceremony, held at Al Badi’ Palace on Sunday, recognized the achievements of young people across the United Arab Emirates in areas extending beyond traditional academics. This youth development initiative underscores a commitment to fostering well-rounded leaders and engaged citizens.

The award ceremony brought together winners, families, educators, and government officials to celebrate dedication to adventure, volunteering, and self-discovery. Sheikha Jawaher emphasized the importance of these qualities in shaping the next generation of UAE leaders, noting she had followed many of their journeys through social media. The event highlighted the growing impact of the Sheikh Sultan Award and its role in recognizing positive contributions from young residents.

The Importance of Youth Development in the UAE

Sheikha Jawaher’s address focused on the core values necessary for success, framing her guidance as a personal message to the young winners. She stressed that strong principles, coupled with the support of family, teachers, and friends, are fundamental to personal and professional growth. Maintaining trust and honoring commitments were also key themes in her speech.

She cautioned against divisiveness, urging the youth to cherish and protect the friendships built on mutual respect. Furthermore, Sheikha Jawaher encouraged self-reflection and accountability, stating that acknowledging and addressing one’s shortcomings is a sign of true strength. This emphasis on character building is a central tenet of the award program.

Navigating the Digital Landscape

Recognizing the pervasive influence of technology, Sheikha Jawaher dedicated a portion of her speech to digital responsibility. She advised the winners to avoid engaging in disputes online and to prioritize credible sources of information. The need to combat the spread of rumors and foster a supportive online environment was also highlighted.

She further emphasized the value of sincerity in all interactions, urging the youth to prioritize truthfulness even when it is difficult. According to Sheikha Jawaher, genuine relationships are built on transparency and honesty, qualities that should guide their conduct both online and offline.

Expanding Opportunities for Young People

Aziza Ibrahim Al Mazmi, Director of the Sheikh Sultan Award for Celebrating the Spirit of Youth, noted the program’s significant growth since its inception. This year’s cohort of 680 winners represents 37 different nationalities, demonstrating the award’s inclusive reach. The award’s vision, rooted in the belief of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, is to unlock the potential within every young person.

The Sheikh Sultan Award distinguishes itself as the first of its kind in the region, actively promoting holistic skill development. Open to UAE residents aged 13-18, the award encourages participation in activities such as adventure challenges, volunteer work, skills training, and physical fitness programs. This broad scope aims to empower young people to explore their talents and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

The award’s focus extends beyond academic achievement, recognizing the importance of practical skills and civic engagement. This approach aligns with the UAE’s broader national strategies for investing in its youth population and preparing them for future leadership roles. The program also aims to foster a sense of national identity and pride among young residents.

Looking ahead, organizers are expected to announce details regarding the sixth edition of the Sheikh Sultan Award in the coming months. Potential adjustments to eligibility criteria or program components remain uncertain, and will likely be influenced by ongoing evaluations of the award’s impact and feedback from participants. The continued growth and evolution of this initiative will be a key indicator of the UAE’s commitment to nurturing its future generations.
