Doha, Qatar – The Workers’ Support and Insurance Fund (WSIF) partnered with Waseef, a Barwa Real Estate Group subsidiary, to host a series of recreational events for laborers at the Al Khor Workers’ Sports Facilities Project and Barwa Al Baraha. These activities celebrated both the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 and Qatar National Day, aiming to improve the worker wellbeing and foster community engagement. The events, which began with the tournament’s opening, provided a space for relaxation and enjoyment during a period of national and regional sporting excitement.

The initiatives took place throughout December 2023 at the designated worker facilities in Al Khor and Barwa Al Baraha, a large labor city managed by Waseef. Attendance was reported as strong, with workers participating in sports, recreational games, and cultural showcases. The Ministry of Interior played a role in facilitating the organization and ensuring the events’ smooth execution, according to a statement released by the WSIF.

Enhancing Worker Wellbeing Through Recreation

The collaboration between WSIF and Waseef highlights a growing emphasis on the welfare of Qatar’s substantial migrant workforce. Qatar has faced international scrutiny regarding labor practices, particularly in the lead-up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, prompting reforms and increased attention to labor rights. These events are a continuation of efforts to demonstrate a commitment to improving living conditions and providing opportunities for social inclusion.

Kholoud Saif Al Kaabi, Executive Director of the WSIF, stated the event aimed to improve the quality of life for workers and raise awareness on important issues. The Fund views supporting and protecting workers’ rights as a central part of its mission, and participation in events like this reinforces that commitment.

Event Highlights and Community Involvement

The recreational program included live broadcasts of the FIFA Arab Cup matches, culminating in the final game. This allowed workers to experience the excitement of the tournament firsthand. Additionally, musical performances and displays from various expatriate communities and Asian schools were featured, showcasing Qatar’s diverse population.

Waseef, as a provider of integrated city management services, has a vested interest in the wellbeing of the residents of Barwa Al Baraha. The company regularly organizes community events and initiatives designed to enhance the quality of life for its residents, including those employed in various sectors. This partnership with WSIF expands the reach of these efforts.

The focus on providing recreational spaces is particularly significant given the demanding nature of many jobs held by migrant workers. Access to leisure activities can contribute to reduced stress, improved mental health, and a stronger sense of community. This aligns with broader international standards for employee welfare and responsible business practices.

However, challenges remain in ensuring consistent and comprehensive support for all workers in Qatar. While initiatives like these are positive steps, ongoing monitoring and enforcement of labor laws are crucial to address systemic issues. The Kafala system, which historically tied workers’ visas to their employers, has undergone reforms, but concerns about its implementation persist.

The success of these events is expected to encourage further collaboration between government entities, private companies, and community organizations to support the worker population. Future initiatives may focus on expanding access to sports facilities, providing educational programs, and offering additional social and cultural activities.

Looking ahead, the WSIF and Waseef have not announced specific plans for follow-up events, but are expected to continue their partnership in supporting worker welfare initiatives. The impact of these programs will likely be assessed through feedback from participants and ongoing monitoring of worker wellbeing indicators. Further developments in Qatar’s labor reforms and the implementation of the FIFA Arab Cup 2025 legacy programs will be key areas to watch in the coming months.

Workers’ Support and Insurance Fund and Waseef are committed to improving the lives of those who contribute to Qatar’s growth.
