Bangladesh officials recently expressed their gratitude to the UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for granting clemency to Bangladeshi nationals involved in protests in the UAE. The Chief Advisor to the government of Bangladesh, Prof. Muhammad Yunus, sent a letter to the UAE Ruler, emphasizing the importance of respecting the laws of the UAE and educating Bangladeshi nationals about the local laws and culture of host countries. This gesture came after the UAE President ordered authorities to drop the sentences of Bangladeshi nationals convicted for protests against former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and arrange for their deportation from the country.

In July, three Bangladeshis were sentenced to life imprisonment, while 54 others were ordered to be deported after serving prison terms for their involvement in riots and protests in the UAE. Following a telephonic conversation with the UAE President, Prof. Muhammad Yunus praised the compassionate leadership displayed by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and cited the decision to annul the sentences of the convicts as a means of strengthening the bond between the two nations. The families of those involved, as well as the Bangladeshi community in the Emirates, expressed relief and appreciation for the UAE’s act of clemency.

The consul general of Bangladesh in Dubai and Northern Emirates, BM Jamal Hossain, also commended the UAE’s gesture and described it as great news for Bangladeshi expatriates living in the UAE, particularly those who were convicted. The Bangladesh Consulate General Dubai expressed gratitude to the UAE President and officials for their initiative. In response to protests by Bangladeshi nationals in the UAE, Bangladesh missions in the country issued advisories urging their counterparts to show restraint and adhere to local laws.

Overall, the relations between Bangladesh and the UAE have been strengthened through the UAE President’s compassionate leadership and decision to grant clemency to Bangladeshi nationals involved in protests in the Emirates. The commitment to respecting the laws of the UAE and educating Bangladeshi nationals about the local culture of host countries showcases a harmonious partnership between the two nations. The act of clemency has brought relief and appreciation to the families of those involved and the Bangladeshi community residing in the UAE. This gesture highlights the importance of diplomacy and mutual respect in international relations.
