In a heartwarming tale of cross-border collaboration and medical expertise coming together, a 43-year-old Indonesian expat residing in the UAE was saved through a life-saving liver transplant. Nur had been working for an Emirati family and had developed acute liver injury, which escalated rapidly to acute fulminant liver failure. The lack of local donors prompted a GCC-wide alert leading to the identification of a compatible liver in Kuwait. Burjeel Medical City, the National Centre for Organ Donation and Transplant at MOHAP, and other regional entities worked together to facilitate this urgent procedure.

Nur’s family flew to Abu Dhabi upon learning of her condition and stood by her side during this critical time. The family expressed immense gratitude towards the donor and the medical professionals involved in Nur’s care. Dr. Rehan Saif shared details of Nur’s deteriorating condition and the urgent need for a liver transplant due to the severity of her acute liver failure. Without immediate intervention, the mortality risk exceeded 80%. The medical team highlighted the importance of early identification and timely referral to a transplant center to save lives in such critical cases.

A high-stakes journey ensued as the logistics of the operation unfolded. Dr. Gourab Sen flew to Kuwait to retrieve the donor’s liver while the medical team in Abu Dhabi prepared for the complex transplant surgery. A private charter aircraft was arranged to transport the liver, ensuring precise timing to minimize ischemic time for a successful transplant. The operation, including retrieval and transplantation, took approximately 14 hours, emphasizing the crucial role of timing and coordination in such life-saving procedures.

Post-transplant, Nur has recovered well and has been discharged, continuing with follow-up consultations. The successful outcome was a result of the collaborative efforts of medical professionals, authorities, and the graciousness of the donor’s family. The Emirati family where Nur worked played a significant role in ensuring she received immediate medical attention and support during this critical time. The family expressed gratitude towards the medical professionals, authorities, and the Emirati family for their exceptional care and support.

The successful outcome of Nur’s transplant surgery serves as a testament to the power of cross-border collaboration, timely intervention, and the selfless act of organ donation. Nur’s recovery has given hope and inspiration to her family, emphasizing the importance of early detection and treatment in life-threatening medical conditions. The combined efforts of medical teams, authorities, and donor families have played a crucial role in saving lives and ensuring a brighter future for patients like Nur.
