French expat Nathalie Grall-Sorensen experienced a life-changing moment two years ago when her 17-year-old son Viggo collapsed and slipped into a coma, never to wake up. Despite the pain of losing her son, Nathalie found solace in the fact that Viggo’s organs were donated, saving five lives through the UAE’s organ donation program Hayat. The decision to donate Viggo’s organs brought some comfort to Nathalie amidst her grief, knowing that her son’s legacy continued through others.

Viggo, a talented golfer with half Danish-French roots, was preparing for a scholarship to the US before his untimely death. He unexpectedly fell unconscious and was declared brain dead, prompting Nathalie and her husband to make the crucial decision to donate his organs. Despite the heart-wrenching experience, Nathalie found strength in her upbringing that taught her the importance of giving and helping others. She now actively advocates for organ donation through the Hayat program, emphasizing the gift of life and the impact it can have on others.

Nathalie’s mission is to save more lives by encouraging people to become organ donors and supporting donor families. Through her outreach programs and podcasts, she has connected with others who have gone through similar experiences of losing a child. Nathalie believes that sharing Viggo’s story gives hope to future donor families and patients on waiting lists. She emphasizes the importance of closing the gap between potential recipients and donors through awareness campaigns and advocacy efforts.

The UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention has recognized Viggo’s family’s contribution to organ donation, highlighting their important role in promoting this noble cause. The Hayat program has significantly expanded its operations over the years, conducting educational activities and training for hospital staff while recruiting professionals. Regular workshops are also organized to enhance nurses’ skills in handling sensitive cases related to organ donation and transplantation, raising greater awareness in the country.

Nathalie’s determination to honor Viggo’s memory by advocating for organ donation has resonated with many, inspiring others to consider this life-saving gift. The impact of Viggo’s legacy continues to spread hope and positivity, transforming loss into a meaningful legacy. Through her personal experiences and outreach efforts, Nathalie hopes to bridge the gap between recipients and donors, creating a community of support for all those affected by organ donation. The story of Viggo and his family exemplifies the profound impact that organ donation can have on individuals and communities, fostering a culture of compassion and generosity in the UAE and beyond.
