Doha, Qatar – Negotiations are underway to bring the Spanish Super Cup back to Qatar, confirmed Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Rafael Louzan. The potential move comes as Saudi Arabia, the current host, will be occupied with the Asian Cup in January and February 2027. This development signals a potential shift in the tournament’s location and timing, impacting football fans and international sports scheduling.

The RFEF is actively seeking an alternative venue for the Spanish Super Cup after Saudi Arabia’s commitment to hosting the Asian Cup from January 7th to February 6th, 2027, creates a scheduling conflict. Louzan indicated Qatar is the primary focus of these discussions, citing an existing “very good contract” that could be further refined. The possibility of relocating the tournament highlights the complexities of securing dates and locations for major sporting events.

Qatar as Potential Host for the Spanish Super Cup

Qatar has previously hosted the Spanish Super Cup in 2023, a move that generated significant revenue for the RFEF. According to reports, the federation is seeking to maintain a financially beneficial arrangement. Louzan stated that while the current contract is favorable, there is always room for improvement in negotiations. This suggests the RFEF is aiming to maximize the economic benefits of hosting the tournament.

Shifting Tournament Dates

To avoid overlapping with peak January sporting events, the RFEF is also considering moving the Spanish Super Cup to the first week of February. This adjustment aims to attract larger audiences and potentially secure more favorable broadcast deals. The change in dates would require coordination with participating clubs and broadcasters.

Additionally, Qatar is set to host two international fixtures featuring the Spanish national team in March. On March 27th, Spain will face Argentina in the Finalissima at Lusail Stadium. Three days later, on March 30th, they will play Egypt in a friendly match at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium. These matches demonstrate Qatar’s growing role as a hub for international football.

The Finalissima, a contest between the champions of Europe and South America, is gaining prominence on the international football calendar. Hosting this match, alongside the potential Spanish Super Cup, reinforces Qatar’s commitment to attracting high-profile sporting events following its successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup in 2022. The country continues to invest in its sports infrastructure and aims to become a leading destination for international competitions.

However, finalizing the deal to bring the Spanish Super Cup back to Qatar depends on reaching a mutually agreeable contract. Negotiations are ongoing, and details regarding financial terms and logistical arrangements remain undisclosed. The RFEF is also likely evaluating other potential bids, although Qatar appears to be the frontrunner at this stage.

Meanwhile, the upcoming matches against Argentina and Egypt provide valuable preparation for the Spanish national team ahead of future qualifying matches and international tournaments. The games will offer an opportunity for coach Luis de la Fuente to assess his squad and experiment with different tactics. These friendly matches are crucial for building team cohesion and preparing for competitive fixtures.

The next step involves continued negotiations between the RFEF and Qatari officials. A formal announcement regarding the host of the 2027 Spanish Super Cup is expected in the coming months, potentially before the end of the year. The final decision will likely hinge on financial considerations and the ability to accommodate the RFEF’s preferred dates. Observers will be watching closely to see if Qatar can secure the tournament and further solidify its position as a major player in international football.
