The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) recently imposed a hefty fine of SR500,000 on a firm in the Qassim region for tampering with the data of a type of fish that is prohibited from being imported into Saudi Arabia. The firm’s actions were discovered when the SFDA received a request to inspect a shipment containing eight types of fish in a warehouse imported from outside the country. During the inspection, it was found that the data on the label and the customs declaration did not match the actual appearance of the imported fish. Further investigation revealed that one of the imported varieties was river tilapia, which is prohibited in the Kingdom. As a result, the entire consignment, weighing approximately two tons, was rejected, and the firm was referred to the relevant authorities for further action.

Under the Food Law and its executive regulations, penalties for such violations include a fine of SR500,000 and the suspension of the violator from practicing any work related to the Food Law. This includes establishments that trade or advertise food containing prohibited, forbidden, contaminated, or banned substances. The SFDA reiterated its commitment to enforcing these regulations in order to safeguard the health and safety of consumers in the Kingdom. The authority encouraged consumers to report any violations they come across in establishments under its supervision by calling the unified number 19999 or using the Tameni application.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to regulations and standards set by governing bodies such as the SFDA. Food safety is a crucial aspect of public health, and any violation of regulations can have serious consequences for both consumers and businesses involved. The SFDA’s swift action in imposing penalties on the firm responsible for tampering with the data of the prohibited fish demonstrates its commitment to upholding food safety standards in Saudi Arabia. By holding violators accountable, the SFDA aims to deter others from engaging in similar illegal practices.

In addition to imposing fines and penalties, the SFDA also works towards raising awareness among consumers about the importance of food safety. By encouraging individuals to report any violations they witness, the authority seeks to create a culture of accountability and transparency in the food industry. This collaborative approach between regulatory bodies and consumers is essential in ensuring that food products sold in the market meet the necessary standards and do not pose a risk to public health. Through initiatives such as the Tameni application, consumers can play an active role in monitoring the food supply chain and alerting authorities to any suspicious activities.

Moving forward, the SFDA will continue to monitor and regulate the importation and sale of food products in Saudi Arabia to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The authority remains dedicated to protecting consumers from potential health hazards and ensuring that only safe and approved products are available in the market. By enforcing strict penalties and actively engaging with consumers, the SFDA aims to create a safe and healthy food environment for all residents of the Kingdom. It is crucial for all stakeholders, including businesses, consumers, and regulatory bodies, to work together in upholding food safety standards and promoting public health in Saudi Arabia.
