RIYADH — Saudi Arabia’s National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has issued a red alert for several regions, including Riyadh, the Eastern Province, Qassim, Hail, and the Northern Borders, forecasting heavy rainfall and strong winds with a significant risk of flash floods. The alerts, effective throughout Tuesday and into Wednesday for some areas, signal the highest level of meteorological danger and necessitate immediate precautionary measures. Residents and travelers are urged to stay informed and heed official warnings as the severe weather unfolds.

The affected areas are bracing for substantial precipitation, potentially exceeding typical rainfall amounts for this time of year. The NCM’s warnings cover a timeframe extending from Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning, with specific timings varying by region. This widespread alert underscores the potential for significant disruption and hazards across a large portion of the country.

Understanding the Current Heavy Rainfall Situation

The NCM’s red alert system is designed to provide timely and critical information to the public regarding imminent severe weather events. A red alert signifies that extremely hazardous weather conditions are expected, posing a threat to life and property. This particular system is being triggered by a developing low-pressure system moving across the Arabian Peninsula.

According to the NCM’s detailed forecasts, Al Qassim is under alert from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Hail is expected to be impacted from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on the same day. The Eastern Province faces a longer alert period, spanning from 3 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Northern Borders region is anticipating the most prolonged impact, with the red alert remaining in effect from 9 a.m. Tuesday until 2 a.m. Wednesday. This extended timeframe highlights the increased risk of prolonged and substantial flooding in this area. The NCM has released digital maps illustrating the alert durations and expected areas of impact, available on their official website.

Regional Forecast Breakdown

While light to moderate rain was reported in Riyadh and surrounding areas on Tuesday, the NCM emphasized that conditions are expected to deteriorate. The capital is included in the red alert despite the initial lower intensity, indicating a forecast for significantly heavier downpours and stronger winds.

The Eastern Province, known for its relatively arid climate, is particularly vulnerable to flash floods when heavy rainfall occurs. The region’s infrastructure may struggle to cope with a sudden influx of water, increasing the risk of damage and disruption.

Qassim and Hail, both agricultural regions, could experience significant impacts to crops and livestock due to the anticipated weather conditions. The potential for soil erosion and damage to irrigation systems is also a concern.

The Northern Borders region, characterized by its desert terrain and wadis (seasonal riverbeds), is at high risk of flash floods. These wadis can quickly fill with water during heavy rainfall, posing a serious threat to anyone in their path.

Potential Impacts and Preparedness Measures

The primary concern associated with this weather system is the potential for widespread flash flooding. The NCM warns that even relatively short bursts of heavy rain can cause significant water accumulation in low-lying areas and wadis. This poses a direct threat to both urban and rural communities.

Strong winds are also expected to accompany the rainfall, potentially leading to power outages, damage to infrastructure, and hazardous driving conditions. Reduced visibility due to dust and rain will further exacerbate these risks.

Authorities are urging residents to take several precautionary measures, including avoiding travel during peak rainfall periods, securing loose objects outdoors, and staying away from wadis and flood-prone areas. The Civil Defense Directorate has also deployed teams to assist with potential rescue operations and manage any resulting emergencies.

The Ministry of Education has not yet issued nationwide school closure directives, but local authorities in affected regions may make independent decisions based on the severity of the storm. Residents are advised to monitor local news and official announcements for updates.

Additionally, the NCM is advising individuals to stay informed through official channels, including their website and social media accounts. Real-time updates on the weather situation and any changes to the alert levels will be provided as the system progresses. The use of early warning systems and public awareness campaigns are crucial in mitigating the impact of such events.

Looking Ahead: Monitoring the System’s Trajectory

The NCM is continuing to closely monitor the movement and intensity of the low-pressure system. The forecast remains subject to change, and the duration and severity of the red alerts may be adjusted based on new data. The primary uncertainty lies in the precise track of the system and the amount of moisture it will draw from the Arabian Gulf and Red Sea.

The situation is expected to be clearer by Wednesday afternoon as the system moves further inland. Authorities will then be able to assess the extent of the damage and begin planning for any necessary recovery efforts. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and prepared for potential disruptions even after the initial alerts have expired.

Further updates and detailed forecasts will be released by the NCM as the heavy rainfall event unfolds. It is crucial to rely on official sources for accurate and timely information to ensure safety and minimize potential risks.
