Qatar Precision Health Institute, a national research center under Qatar Foundation, recently organized a workshop on genomics for primary school science teachers in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. Held at the ministry, the workshop aimed to introduce teachers to the concepts of genomics and provide training on interactive genomics stations to help students understand the science through the ‘Genome Heroes’ game. The focus of the workshop was to simplify information on genomics to make it more accessible to primary school students and familiarize them with modern scientific concepts and developments.

Dima Darwish, Head of Scientific Education at Qatar Precision Health Institute, emphasized the importance of genomics in treating diseases and its role in advancing healthcare through precision medicine and personalized practices. She highlighted the challenges in delivering basic information about genomics to children and how the ‘Genome Heroes’ game can help in spreading knowledge about genomics to the next generation. Teachers were also informed about specializations in precision medicine such as genetic counseling, pharmacogenomics, and bioinformatics during the workshop.

The workshop provided participants with insight into the latest developments in genomics and its significance in the future of healthcare. Through the ‘Genome Heroes’ game, teachers were introduced to the fundamental concepts of genomics, including cells, DNA, genetics, and mutagenic repair. The game aims to engage players in learning about genomics through interactive gameplay and storytelling, making it easier for students to grasp complex scientific concepts in a fun and engaging way.

By familiarizing primary school teachers with genomics and the resources available, the workshop aims to empower educators to incorporate genomics education into their curriculum. By leveraging interactive tools like the ‘Genome Heroes’ game, teachers can make learning about genomics more engaging and accessible to students. Additionally, by understanding the importance of genomics in healthcare and precision medicine, teachers can play a vital role in preparing the next generation of students for advancements in the field of genomics and personalized healthcare.

Overall, the workshop on genomics for primary school science teachers organized by Qatar Precision Health Institute in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education marks a significant step towards promoting genomics education in Qatar. By equipping teachers with the knowledge and tools to introduce genomics to students in a simplified and engaging manner, the workshop seeks to foster a better understanding of the role of genomics in healthcare and inspire future generations to pursue careers in this field. Through initiatives like the ‘Genome Heroes’ game, Qatar is making strides in spreading awareness about genomics and paving the way for a more informed and educated society.
