The State of Qatar is actively participating in the 65th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva. Led by Permanent Representative HE Dr. Hind bint Abdulrahman Al Muftah, the delegation is working towards strengthening partnerships in various areas of intellectual property. The State of Qatar has been making efforts to join several international WIPO-run conventions, with the Madrid Protocol for the International Registration of Marks set to enter into force on August 3, 2024. This underscores Qatar’s commitment to modernizing its legislative framework for intellectual property protection.

In her statement at the WIPO’s inaugural session, HE Dr. Hind Al Muftah highlighted the State of Qatar’s cooperation with the organization, particularly in areas such as higher education, entrepreneurship, and dispute settlement. She also praised the success of the Diplomatic Conference on Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge, emphasizing the importance of promoting transparency in the patent system and achieving equitable benefit-sharing, especially with indigenous peoples and local communities. The State of Qatar’s delegation is actively participating in various WIPO committees and is looking forward to the Diplomatic Conference to Conclude and Adopt a Design Law Treaty in Saudi Arabia in November 2024, supporting proposals to incorporate the Arabic language into WIPO’s works and systems.

WIPO, established in 1967 through the WIPO Convention, is one of the oldest professional agencies in the UN system and the largest international organization in Geneva. With 193 member states, WIPO aims to develop an international intellectual property system that encourages innovation and creativity for the benefit of all. The State of Qatar joined WIPO in 1976 and has since been actively involved in its activities, including negotiations in various committees and conferences. The organization serves as a global forum for intellectual property services, policy, information, and cooperation.

The State of Qatar’s delegation’s participation in the WIPO meetings demonstrates its commitment to advancing intellectual property protection and cooperation at the international level. Through its engagement with WIPO, Qatar aims to modernize its legislative framework, enhance partnerships, and support initiatives that promote transparency and equitable benefit-sharing in intellectual property matters. The upcoming Diplomatic Conference in Saudi Arabia provides an opportunity for member states to work together towards the adoption of a Design Law Treaty, with Qatar’s delegation supporting efforts to incorporate the Arabic language into WIPO’s operations.

As a member of WIPO since 1976, the State of Qatar has a long history of engagement with the organization and its mission to promote innovation and creativity through intellectual property protection. By actively participating in WIPO meetings and conferences, Qatar seeks to contribute to the development of a balanced and effective international intellectual property system that benefits all stakeholders. The State of Qatar’s delegation’s involvement in the 65th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO highlights its ongoing commitment to advancing intellectual property rights and cooperation on a global scale.
