Qatar joins Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s Green Development Forum

Qatar’s commitment to green development was highlighted at the Green Development Forum of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) held in Qingdao, China. The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, led the Qatari delegation and emphasized the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental preservation as outlined in Qatar’s National Vision 2030. The country’s third national development strategy (2024-2030) aims to diversify the economy while ensuring sustainability.

As a leading global supplier of natural gas, Qatar plays a significant role in promoting green development and the transition towards a low-carbon future. The country recently launched the National Renewable Energy Strategy and the issuance of Green Sukuk, marking a new phase in financing environmentally friendly projects. Qatar’s focus on achieving a balance between human needs and environmental preservation is evident in its ESG and Sustainability Strategy for the Financial Sector.

During the forum, Dr. Al Subaie engaged in discussions with various ministers and international officials, including those from the Maldives, China, Belarus, Iran, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. The meetings revolved around joint efforts to address climate challenges and enhance cooperation to preserve the environment and biodiversity. Qatar’s participation in such forums demonstrates its commitment to sustainable development and collaboration on global environmental issues.

The Minister highlighted the significance of energy security as a global obstacle to development, emphasizing Qatar’s role in promoting green development. The country’s strategic position as a major natural gas supplier positions it well to drive the transition towards a low-carbon future. By launching initiatives such as the National Renewable Energy Strategy and Green Sukuk, Qatar is actively contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.

The announcement of Qatar’s ESG and Sustainability Strategy for the Financial Sector underscores the country’s focus on enhancing the efficiency of the financial system in supporting national sustainability goals. By prioritizing environmentally friendly projects and fostering a balance between human needs and environmental preservation, Qatar is setting a precedent for green financing in the region.
