Paternity leave has become an essential benefit for new fathers in the UAE, allowing them to take time off work to support their families as they welcome a newborn. The introduction of paternity leave in the UAE in August 2020, with it taking effect in February 2022, has been a welcomed change for many working fathers. Understanding the details of paternity leave, including eligibility requirements and duration, is crucial for fathers who wish to take advantage of this benefit.

To be eligible for paternity leave in the UAE, male employees in both the federal government and private sectors must have a newborn child. Providing your employer with a copy of your child’s birth certificate is necessary to confirm your legal status as the child’s parent. It is also advisable to notify your employer and file your leave request in advance of your baby’s arrival to ensure a smooth transition while you are away. Additionally, reviewing your company’s specific paternity leave policy is important as there may be additional steps or requirements based on your firm’s guidelines and internal policies.

Male employees in the UAE are entitled to five days of paternity leave, which is shorter compared to maternity leave. While many private companies provide five days of paternity leave, some firms offer between 30 and 42 days to their male employees. However, paternity leave duration can vary for government employees, with male employees in Dubai and Abu Dhabi’s governments entitled to just three days of paternity leave. Understanding your employer’s specific policies regarding paternity leave is essential to avoid any confusion or issues while taking time off work to be with your family.

Once your employer has approved your request for paternity leave, you can use your leave within six months of the birth of your child. If you wish to extend your time with your family, you can also combine your paternity leave with your annual leave, as long as both are taken within that six-month window. Being aware of when and how to take your paternity leave can help you make the most of this valuable time to bond with your newborn and support your family during this important milestone in your life. It is important for new fathers in the UAE to understand the details of paternity leave and take advantage of this benefit to achieve a better work-life balance while adjusting to the changes that come with becoming a parent.

By staying informed about the latest news and updates, new fathers in the UAE can ensure they are aware of their rights and entitlements when it comes to paternity leave. Following the guidelines outlined in the UAE labor laws and understanding your company’s specific paternity leave policies can help you navigate this important time in your life with confidence and peace of mind. Taking the necessary steps to prepare for paternity leave, including notifying your employer, providing the required documentation, and reviewing your company’s policies, can help you make the most of this time off work to be with your family and support your partner during the postnatal period.
