Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni recently hosted Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Rome as part of Orbán’s European tour to discuss Hungary’s upcoming presidency program for the EU Council. The visit comes after meetings with leaders in Berlin and before a scheduled stop in Paris. The purpose of the tour is to brief European leaders on Hungary’s priorities during its time as president of the EU Council. Meloni expressed satisfaction at the meeting’s conclusion, highlighting shared concerns such as illegal migration, Europe’s competitiveness, and declining birth rates.

The meeting between Meloni and Orbán also addressed other issues, including differing views on Ukraine. The timing of the visit, just before a crucial EU summit, is significant as discussions about top EU positions are anticipated. Orbán made it clear during the meeting that his party would not be joining the European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR), a political group led by Meloni. While Meloni’s party remains dominant in Italy and is expected to seek a top commission post for the country, Orbán’s decision not to join the ECR reflects Hungary’s shifting political alliances within the EU.

One of the key focus areas of Hungary’s upcoming presidency program is illegal migration. Orbán has been a vocal advocate for stricter border controls and tougher immigration policies. By addressing this issue in its presidency program, Hungary aims to lead discussions on a more cohesive and effective approach to managing migration within the EU. The program also emphasizes the need to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness, recognizing the importance of economic growth and innovation in maintaining the EU’s global position.

Another significant aspect highlighted by Hungary’s presidency program is the declining birth rates across Europe. With many EU countries facing aging populations and low birth rates, Orbán’s government aims to raise awareness of this demographic challenge and propose policies to incentivize family growth. By addressing this issue at the EU level, Hungary hopes to foster a more sustainable and prosperous future for all member states. The focus on declining birth rates underscores the importance of long-term planning and strategic initiatives to address demographic shifts.

In addition to these key priorities, Hungary’s presidency program may also touch on other pressing issues facing the EU, such as the situation in Ukraine. While Hungary and Italy may have differing views on certain matters, both countries recognize the need for a united and cohesive approach to addressing regional and global challenges. By engaging in dialogue and cooperation with other EU member states, Hungary aims to promote understanding and collaboration across borders. The upcoming EU summit will provide a crucial opportunity for leaders to discuss and debate these issues, setting the stage for future cooperation and joint initiatives.

Overall, the meeting between Giorgia Meloni and Viktor Orbán serves as a platform for discussing Hungary’s upcoming presidency program and key priorities for the EU Council. By engaging in dialogue with other European leaders, Hungary aims to foster a more cohesive and effective approach to addressing pressing challenges, such as illegal migration, Europe’s competitiveness, and declining birth rates. The meeting highlights the importance of collaboration and cooperation within the EU to promote shared interests and achieve common goals. As Hungary prepares to take on the presidency of the EU Council, its leadership and vision will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the European Union.
