Oman takes part in the World Leaders Climate Action Summit in Azerbaijan

The Sultanate of Oman recently participated in the World Leaders Climate Action Summit held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The delegation was led by Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals. The summit, attended by heads of state and government, focused on expanding the scope of cutting greenhouse gas emissions and discussed financing the Climate Change Loss and Damage Response Fund. Eng. Mansoor bin Hamad Al Shuaili, a member of the Omani negotiating team at the UN Climate Change Conference, highlighted key areas such as adapting to climate change, reducing emissions, technology and knowledge transfer, and ensuring a fair transition to clean energy.

Dr. Maryam bint Mohammed Al Busaidi, Head of the National Programme for Zero Neutrality, emphasized the importance of the summit in discussing the climate finance funds. She highlighted the high ambitions surrounding this issue, stating that it would support countries in their climate change efforts. Omani negotiators have been collaborating with various sectors in the country to address climate change. They have been working to ensure compatibility and integration with other groups participating in the COP29, including the Arab Summit Group, the Group of 77 and China, and other groups with similar interests as Oman.

Climate negotiators have seen progress at the COP29, reaching an agreement on the rules of a global carbon market managed by the United Nations. Omani negotiators are aligning with global trends, with a focus on achieving zero carbon neutrality by 2050. This highlights the Sultanate of Oman’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and addressing climate change. The efforts of the Omani delegation at the summit showcase the country’s dedication to taking action on climate change and contributing to global efforts to combat the crisis.

The summit in Baku provided a platform for world leaders to discuss and address pressing issues related to climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. It served as an opportunity for countries to come together and work towards common goals. The discussions around financing the Climate Change Loss and Damage Response Fund underscore the importance of financial resources in tackling climate change challenges. The summit also allowed for sharing best practices and strategies for reducing emissions and transitioning to clean energy, highlighting the importance of collaboration and cooperation among nations.

Oman’s participation in the World Leaders Climate Action Summit demonstrates the country’s active engagement in global climate change initiatives. By contributing to discussions on climate finance, emissions reduction, and technology transfer, Oman is showcasing its commitment to addressing climate change. The collaboration with various groups and countries with similar interests further strengthens Oman’s position in taking concrete actions towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future. The ongoing efforts of Omani negotiators at the COP29 reflect a dedication to achieving zero carbon neutrality by 2050 and aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.
