NHRC signs memorandum of understanding with Azerbaijan Institute of Democracy and Human Rights

The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) of the State of Qatar signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Azerbaijan Institute of Democracy and Human Rights in Baku, with the aim of enhancing bilateral cooperation in promoting human rights. NHRC Chairperson H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah emphasized that the MoU is guided by international human rights standards and the Paris Principles. She highlighted the commitment of both parties to strengthen their partnership, exchange expertise, and improve their national and international performance.

During her meeting with President of the Azerbaijan Institute of Democracy and Human Rights H E Dr. Ahmad Shahidov, Al Attiyah praised Qatar’s efforts in supporting human rights and empowering women in Qatari society. She mentioned Qatar’s ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the country’s progress in increasing job opportunities for Qatari women. Al Attiyah also highlighted the role of NHRC in complementing the work of various state institutions in empowering women at all levels.

The NHRC Chairperson emphasized the establishment of the National Committee for the Affairs of Woman, Children, the Elderly, and People with Disabilities to protect and promote the rights of these groups. She noted that the committee will continue its efforts to ensure comprehensive protection and care for women to exercise their effective role in society. Al Attiyah underscored the importance of following up on achieving the goals of relevant international agreements and covenants to which the state is a party.

President of the Azerbaijan Institute of Democracy and Human Rights H E Dr. Ahmad Shahidov highlighted the discussion with NHRC on the development of human rights in both countries, including legislation, procedures, and institutions promoting and protecting human rights. He mentioned the institute’s proposal to organize a visit for Azerbaijani education leaders to Qatar to exchange experiences and learn about ways to spread and educate about human rights. Shahidov also mentioned the agreement to exchange experiences and partner on mechanisms to receive and address petitions and complaints related to human rights.

In conclusion, the MoU between NHRC and the Azerbaijan Institute of Democracy and Human Rights signifies a commitment to promoting human rights and strengthening cooperation between the two countries. The agreement highlights the importance of international human rights standards and the role of national institutions in advancing human rights. Through collaboration and exchange of expertise, both parties aim to enhance their efforts in promoting humanity, equality, and freedom of expression in their respective societies. The partnership between NHRC and the Azerbaijan Institute of Democracy and Human Rights sets a positive example of international cooperation in the field of human rights.
