The Israeli military has promised to retaliate following a missile attack from Iran in response to previous Israeli fire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Iran’s actions, calling it a “big mistake” and vowing that Iran would pay for the attack. The Israeli Defence Forces reported that 180 missiles hit Israel, triggering air raid sirens across the country. Netanyahu stated that whoever attacks Israel will face retaliation, hinting that Iran could face a similar fate as Gaza and Lebanon.

Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations defended the missile strike as “legal, rational, and legitimate,” citing Israeli strikes on the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon as the reason for their response. US President Joe Biden acknowledged that the US had anticipated Iran’s missile attack and had engaged in intensive planning to defend against it. Biden expressed his support for Israel, stating that the US and Israel had collaborated to protect Israel during the missile barrage. He also condemned Iran’s actions, as did other world leaders including European Council President Charles Michel and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The Prime Minister of the UK, Keir Starmer, condemned Iran’s attack on Israel during a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock urged Iran to avoid escalating the conflict further. Despite the missile attack triggering air raid sirens in Israel, the IDF reported that very few citizens were injured in the attack. The Iron Dome defense system successfully intercepted multiple missiles, minimizing the impact of the attack on Israeli civilians. The international community has condemned Iran’s actions, emphasizing the need to de-escalate tensions and protect civilian lives.
