Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, a former NBA player and father of the late basketball legend Kobe Bryant, passed away at the age of 69. He played for La Salle University from 1973-1975 and later coached the team from 1993-96. During his NBA career from 1975-1983, Bryant played for the Philadelphia 76ers, San Diego Clippers, and Houston Rockets, among others. He also had stints playing in Europe, including Italy and France.

La Salle University expressed their sadness over the loss of Joe Bryant, calling him a beloved member of the Explorer family. Bryant was a forward who had a successful career in the NBA, averaging 8.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. He continued his basketball journey as a coach, leading the Women’s NBA Los Angeles Sparks to a record of 40-24 over three seasons. Bryant also coached teams in Asia, including clubs in Tokyo, Hokkaido, Bangkok, and Fukuoka.

Bryant’s son, Kobe Bryant, followed in his father’s footsteps to become a basketball legend. Kobe, who was born while his father was playing for the 76ers, went on to win five NBA championships, two Olympic gold medals, and the 2008 NBA Most Valuable Player award during his career with the Los Angeles Lakers from 1996-2016. Tragically, Kobe Bryant passed away in a helicopter crash in 2020 at the age of 41, leaving behind a legacy as an 18-time NBA All-Star guard.

Joe Bryant’s contributions to the basketball world, both as a player and a coach, have left a lasting impact. His time at La Salle University and in the NBA paved the way for his son Kobe to become one of the greatest basketball players of all time. The Bryant family’s dedication to the sport of basketball has inspired countless individuals around the world, and their legacy will continue to be remembered for generations to come. Rest in peace, Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, a true basketball icon.
