Japan took a decisive victory over Samoa in the Pacific Nations Cup semi-final rugby union match, setting up a final clash with defending champions Fiji. The 49-27 win in Tokyo saw Japan scoring seven tries, with Eddie Jones earning his third consecutive win as head coach. Jones expressed the importance of improving their defense in preparation for the final against Fiji, emphasizing their goal of winning the tournament.

The match started with Dylan Riley scoring an early try for Japan, followed by a penalty try that increased their lead. Despite Samoa’s efforts, Japan continued to dominate with tries from Tomoki Osada and Seungsin Lee. Samoa managed to score through Tuna Tuitama, but Japan maintained their lead with another try from Lee before halftime. The second half saw Kanji Shimokawa extending Japan’s lead with a try, with both teams adding more points before the final whistle.

Jones commended his team for stepping up against a stronger opposition like Samoa and acknowledged the challenges ahead in facing Fiji in the final. He highlighted the need for a solid defensive strategy to secure a victory in the upcoming match in Osaka. With a week of preparation ahead, Japan aims to lift the trophy for the first time since 2019 and continue their impressive winning streak under Jones’ leadership.

The victory over Samoa showcased Japan’s attacking prowess and ability to capitalize on opportunities, with players like Riley and Osada making significant contributions. Despite Samoa’s resilience and scoring efforts, Japan maintained control of the game and executed their game plan effectively. The upcoming final against Fiji promises to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams eager to claim the Pacific Nations Cup title.

Japan’s performance in the semi-final demonstrated their determination and skill on the rugby field, proving themselves as strong contenders in the tournament. With Jones at the helm, the team has shown improvement and consistency in their game, building momentum towards the final showdown against Fiji. The stage is set for an exciting clash between two formidable teams in what promises to be a thrilling finale to the Pacific Nations Cup.
