Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) President Abdulaziz Al-Duailej recently announced that the country is making significant strides in search and rescue operations, solidifying its position as a global leader in this field. The Kingdom has proposed September 10 to be designated as “International Search and Rescue Day,” with a $200,000 donation to support the initiative. These announcements were made during the inauguration of the 71st meeting of the International Satellite Search and Rescue Program (COSPAS-SARSAT), hosted by Saudi Arabia from October 15 to 24.

Al-Duailej emphasized Saudi Arabia’s pivotal role in global search and rescue efforts since joining the program in 2000. The Kingdom has developed advanced search and rescue capabilities, including the establishment of the Saudi Center for Search and Rescue Missions in Jeddah. This center serves as a regional hub, supporting search and rescue operations for seven neighboring countries, such as Bahrain, Jordan, and Oman. Saudi Arabia is committed to the Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System and the Autonomous Distress Tracking technology, ensuring regulatory compliance by aircraft operators and rescue coordination centers, and has been implementing technological advancements like drones to enhance aviation safety and efficiency.

The COSPAS-SARSAT meeting in Riyadh involved participants from 45 countries and organizations, chaired by Henrik Smith, the current chairman of the COSPAS-SARSAT Program Council. As part of the meeting, Saudi Arabia also announced its intention to host the Central and Southern Regions Meeting in Jeddah in 2025, which will provide specialized training workshops to enhance the capabilities of search and rescue personnel in the region. Al-Duailej stressed the importance of cooperation among all participants to create a safer future in civil aviation globally. He highlighted the Kingdom’s active role in search and rescue, particularly through its satellite-based efforts, establishing it as a significant player on the international stage.

The announcement of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to search and rescue operations comes at a time when the world is increasingly focused on enhancing safety and security in aviation. By proposing “International Search and Rescue Day” and hosting international meetings and training workshops, the Kingdom is demonstrating its dedication to improving search and rescue capabilities not just within its borders but also in the wider region. These initiatives align with Saudi Arabia’s efforts to adapt to technological advancements and leverage satellite-based technologies in search and rescue operations.

As Saudi Arabia continues to strengthen its position as a global leader in search and rescue operations, it is setting an example for other countries to follow. By investing in advanced capabilities, hosting international meetings, and promoting cooperation among stakeholders, the Kingdom is playing a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of civil aviation worldwide. With the announcement of the Central and Southern Regions Meeting in 2025, Saudi Arabia is paving the way for future collaborations and advancements in search and rescue efforts, ultimately contributing to a safer and more secure future for all in the aviation industry.
