Efforts to Improve Health Nutrition in the UAE

This year, the United Arab Emirates has made significant strides in promoting healthy nutrition and combating obesity and related chronic diseases. These efforts encompass comprehensive initiatives, including regulating food product components, enhancing dietary options available in markets and schools, and implementing early detection mechanisms for obesity. This multifaceted approach aims to develop effective weight management strategies based on health indicators.

The importance of these efforts was highlighted by the National Health and Nutrition Survey 2024-2025, the results of which were announced by the Ministry of Health and Prevention in January, in collaboration with the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Center and various federal and local entities, and based on the approval of the World Health Organization.

Key Findings from the Health Survey

The survey, which examined dietary patterns among individuals aged 18 to 69, revealed alarming statistics regarding nutrition habits. It found that 96.2% of respondents exceeded the recommended sodium intake levels, while 27.3% surpassed the recommended limits for sugar. Additionally, 27.4% reported consuming sugary beverages daily. More than half of the participants, 56.1%, exceeded the advised limits for fats, with an average fiber intake of only 23.1 grams per day.

Moreover, the results indicated that 22.4% of adults are classified as obese, compared to 16.1% of children aged six to 17 years, and 2.2% of children aged six months to five years. These alarming figures triggered the Ministry of Health and Prevention to take urgent action.

New Regulations on Food Products

In response to these concerning health indicators, the Ministry of Health and Prevention initiated a new regulation in October. This decision specifies maximum limits for sodium, total sugars, and total fats in various categories of packaged food products, whether domestically produced or imported. The aim is to enhance the nutritional value of these products and mitigate the incidence of obesity and other non-communicable diseases related to unhealthy diets.

This regulation applies to establishments dealing with the specified products, with an exception for those prepared for direct export unless they are traded within the country. It allows for the continued sale of inventories produced or imported before the regulation takes effect for a period not exceeding one year or until the expiration date, whichever comes first.

The implementation is divided into two phases, with the final product limits set to be achieved by December 31, 2030. The first group of products has a nine-month compliance timeframe, while the second group has an extended period of two years and three months.

Specific Changes to Nutritional Limits

The first group includes items such as fermented and flatbread, sweetened milk drinks and milk alternatives, flavored yogurt, and high-salt snacks. The second group focuses on processed cheese.

Under these new regulations, the final sodium limit for fermented bread is set at 370 mg per 100 grams, compared to the initial phase limit of 444 mg. Additionally, sugars are capped at five grams and total fats at seven grams per 100 grams. For sweetened milk drinks, the final limit for sugars is set at eight grams, while flavored yogurt or milk is restricted to ten grams per 100 grams.

Supporting Healthy Choices in Shopping Environments

The UAE’s efforts to promote healthy eating extend beyond regulations to shopping environments and digital platforms. The government is encouraging the private sector to provide healthier options while minimizing the visibility of high-fat, high-sugar, and high-salt products. This holistic approach aims to create an ecosystem that supports healthier food choices for consumers.

Additionally, early detection of obesity and the development of weight management pathways across different life stages form crucial components of the UAE’s strategy. These efforts align with the nation’s broader public health goals.

Economic Implications of Health Interventions

Expected positive outcomes from these initiatives also include significant economic benefits. A report released in May, during a panel discussion hosted in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, indicated that effective interventions for managing obesity and weight loss could lead to cumulative savings in healthcare costs of up to $1.5 billion. Moreover, these initiatives could contribute approximately $51 billion to the gross domestic product (GDP) by 2031.

These findings exemplify how public health efforts can intersect with economic growth and underscore the importance of sustained investment in health-related policies.

Looking Ahead: Future Developments in Nutrition Policies

As the UAE continues to prioritize healthy nutrition and obesity prevention, observers should watch for the enforcement of the new regulations and their impact on consumer choices. With public health at the forefront of government objectives, future initiatives may further enhance the commitment to a healthier population. The focus will likely remain on monitoring progress, adapting strategies, and ensuring ongoing public engagement in the pursuit of improved health outcomes.
