OMIFCO signs two development agreements with South Al Sharqiyah Governorate

The Oman India Fertiliser Company (OMIFCO) has signed two development agreements with the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate to fund infrastructure and social-support projects totaling 310,000 Omani rials. The agreements were formalized during a ceremony between Governor Dr. Yahya bin Badr bin Malik Al Maawali and OMIFCO’s Sustainability and Corporate Communications Manager, Eng. Khalid bin Mohammed bin Nasser Al Fannah Al Uraimi.

The funding will support road and protection-wall works in mountainous areas and provide electrical and electronic household devices to low-income families and social assistance beneficiaries across several wilayats. Officials said the move is part of an ongoing community partnership to boost local services and economic resilience.

Project breakdown: roads, protection walls, and household support

The larger of the two agreements allocates 200,000 OMR to construct mountain roads and protective retaining walls aimed at improving the readiness and safety of the local road network. According to provincial officials, the works will prioritize high-risk segments to raise safety standards and improve access for residents and service providers.

The second agreement assigns 110,000 OMR for the procurement and distribution of electrical and electronic appliances to households with limited incomes and beneficiaries of social protection programs. Targeted wilayats include Sur, Al Kamil and Al Wafi, Jalan Bani Bu Hassan, Jalan Bani Bu Ali, and Masirah, where officials expect the in-kind support to stabilize living conditions and supplement social safety nets.

Context and past initiatives supporting implementation

Officials noted these agreements extend existing cooperation between OMIFCO and the governorate. The infrastructure project is an addition to a joint development program that received approximately 650,000 OMR in funding for the 2022–2026 phase. Meanwhile, the social-assistance initiative builds on a community program that supported 3,221 families from 2021 to 2025 with cumulative funding of around 440,000 OMR.

These prior efforts provided a framework for coordination, beneficiary identification, and monitoring, officials said. Therefore, local authorities and OMIFCO aim to leverage lessons learned on procurement procedures, site selection, and distribution logistics to accelerate implementation while maintaining transparency and accountability.

Partnership objectives: sustainable development and community partnership

The governor emphasized that the agreements reflect a strategic public-private partnership model designed to align corporate social responsibility with regional development priorities. He said such collaboration seeks to improve essential service infrastructure, enhance quality of life, and support vulnerable households in ways that contribute to sustained economic and social outcomes.

OMIFCO described the signing as consistent with its role as a development partner committed to sustainable development and to focusing on initiatives that respond to community needs. The company highlighted that its community investments aim not merely to deliver projects, but to strengthen local institutions, boost livelihoods, and promote broader social stability.

Expected impacts on local services and livelihoods

Infrastructure upgrades will likely reduce travel times, lower maintenance costs, and mitigate hazards associated with mountain roads, officials project. Improved road connectivity can also facilitate access to markets, schools, and healthcare, thereby supporting small businesses and household incomes over time.

Distribution of electrical and electronic appliances is expected to provide immediate relief to eligible families and support basic living standards. In addition, these interventions align with social protection objectives by complementing cash transfers and other welfare measures, according to local social services representatives.

Implementation, oversight, and what to watch next

Authorities said that project implementation will follow standard procurement and contracting processes, with periodic monitoring and coordination between governorate offices and OMIFCO. Therefore, timelines will depend on tendering cycles, site preparatory works, and supply chains for equipment.

Stakeholders and residents should watch for public notices on tender awards, community briefings about beneficiary selection, and updates on construction schedules. Officials also indicated plans to publish progress reports to ensure transparency and to measure socio-economic impact over the short and medium term.

Conclusion and forward look

The agreements between the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate and OMIFCO represent a continuation of targeted investment linking private-sector resources to local development needs. Moving forward, observers should look for the launch of construction works, the roll-out of appliance distributions, and monitoring data that indicate how these projects affect road safety, service delivery, and household wellbeing.

By formalizing these commitments, provincial leaders and OMIFCO have signaled an intent to deepen institutional cooperation and to pursue development outcomes that support the governorate’s priorities and broader national objectives, including those set out under Oman Vision 2040.
