Strengthening Ties: Sultan Haitham’s Visit to Angola

During a significant diplomatic visit, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman and Angolan President João Manuel Lourenço emphasized the importance of deepening cooperation between their nations. The two leaders, meeting on September 17-18, 2026, in Angola, expressed mutual interest in exploring new collaboration areas and implementing strategic initiatives that benefit both countries.

Details of the Diplomatic Engagement

This high-level visit was organized at the invitation of President Lourenço and included a vast Omani delegation comprising several ministers and senior government officials. The discussions aimed to strengthen the existing bonds of friendship and cooperation, addressing various fields that reflect mutual interests.

Upon arrival, Sultan Haitham was warmly welcomed by President Lourenço at the presidential palace, where a special meeting led to broader discussions between the two nations’ delegations. These meetings fostered a spirit of friendship, showcasing the leaders’ commitment to enhancing economic ties and improving the welfare of their respective peoples.

Key Agreements and Areas of Collaboration

Prominent topics during the visit included commemorative greetings such as Sultan Haitham congratulating President Lourenço on the 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence, which occurred on November 11, 2025, and the acknowledgement of the 24th anniversary of the peace agreement that ended Angola’s civil war.

Both leaders exchanged views on bilateral, regional, and global issues, affirming their shared perspectives on numerous topics of mutual concern. They reiterated the necessity of enriching cooperation and agreed to identify new avenues for collaboration, particularly in sectors such as diplomacy, oil, energy, mineral resources, finance, tourism, agriculture, fisheries, logistics services, and housing. This culminated in the signing of ten legal cooperation documents and three memoranda of understanding between state-owned enterprises from both nations.

Future Engagement and Political Consultations

Furthermore, the leaders expressed their intention to establish regular political consultations to assess the progress of their agreements. The next round of these conversations and the inaugural session of the bilateral committee are set to take place in Muscat, the capital of Oman, with the exact date to be determined through diplomatic channels.

Global challenges also featured prominently in the discussions. Both leaders voiced serious concerns regarding ongoing conflicts in Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe, calling for an immediate ceasefire and urging all parties to engage in peaceful dialogue to achieve lasting solutions. Regarding the Strait of Hormuz crisis, President Lourenço expressed solidarity with affected nations and recognized Oman’s efforts in promoting dialogue to ease tensions and foster peace.

Commitment to Global Principles

As for international matters, both Sultan Haitham and President Lourenço underscored the importance of upholding international law and respecting state sovereignty, firmly opposing any interference in national internal affairs. They also reiterated their support for peaceful coexistence and the right of peoples to self-determination, aligning their views on the Palestinian issue and condemning human rights violations.

The outcomes of this visit signify a pivotal milestone in reinforcing the partnership between Angola and Oman, reflecting shared aspirations for peace, development, and mutual respect.

Conclusion and Next Steps

In conclusion, Sultan Haitham’s visit to Angola has heralded a new chapter in the diplomatic relationship between the two countries, marked by commitment to cooperation and mutual benefits. Moving forward, attention will be focused on the implementation of the agreements signed and the upcoming political consultations planned in Muscat. As both nations look to the future, further engagement on strategic partnerships in various sectors is anticipated, reaffirming their roles in a dynamic global landscape.
