Google has rolled out a series of new AI-powered features to its Google Photos service, enhancing the editing capabilities and user experience. The updates include a new “Ask” button for AI-powered answers and edit requests, as well as AI templates to create new photos. According to Google, these changes aim to simplify photo editing and make it more intuitive for users.

The new features are being introduced in several stages, with some already available to iOS users in the U.S. Google’s AI-powered editing tools now allow users to describe their desired edits using voice or text, enabling modifications to images with greater ease. This functionality was initially introduced for Pixel 10 series phones in August and is now being expanded to iOS devices.

Enhanced Editing Capabilities with AI

One of the key updates is the “Help me edit” feature, which recognizes individuals in photos based on Google Photos’ face groups. Users can input instructions related to specific people in the image, such as removing sunglasses or adjusting facial expressions. This is made possible by advancements in AI technology, including Google’s Nano Banana image model, which allows for the recreation of images in various styles, such as Renaissance portraits or cartoon strips.

Additionally, Google is introducing AI templates that enable users to convert their photos into specific formats. For instance, users can transform images into retro portraits or action figures. This feature is set to roll out on Android devices in the U.S. and India next week under the “Create” tab, where Nano Banana is most frequently used.

Improved Search Functionality

Google Photos is also receiving a design update with the introduction of a new “Ask” button. This feature serves as a starting point for various AI requests, allowing users to inquire about the photo, discover related moments, or edit the image using prompts. The company will also display suggestion chips to guide users on the available options. The “Ask” button is currently being rolled out to users in the U.S. on both iOS and Android devices.

Furthermore, Google is expanding its AI-powered search feature to over 100 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, and India. This search functionality, initially launched in the United States last year, will now support more than 17 new languages, such as Arabic, Bengali, and Spanish. The expanded search capabilities aim to make it easier for users worldwide to find and manage their photos.

As Google continues to enhance its Google Photos service with AI-driven features, users can expect a more streamlined and intuitive experience. The rollout of these updates is expected to continue in the coming weeks, with further expansions planned for other regions and languages. Users should watch for additional announcements regarding the availability of these features in their respective markets.
