England’s victory in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024 against Switzerland has brought them to their third semifinal in four major tournaments under manager Gareth Southgate. However, criticism has been mounting against the team for their perceived boring style of play. If England wins the final on Sunday, their style may be forgiven, but the lack of excitement from a team with so many attacking stars has surprised viewers across Europe.

In their previous two rounds against Switzerland and Slovakia, England managed just five shots on target in 240 minutes of play, requiring penalties and extra time to advance. Former England striker Alan Shearer described the team as “rotten” after their narrow win over Slovakia, while French Euro 2000 winner Emmanuel Petit labeled them as “boring”. Despite criticisms, Southgate defended his team’s performance, pointing out the pressure and defensive strategies employed by their opponents.

Southgate acknowledged the criticisms of his team’s style of play, attributing it to several factors such as the defensive formations of their opponents and the condition of the pitch. Despite the lack of goals, Southgate highlighted the difficult circumstances his players are facing and the achievement of reaching the semifinals in their recent tournaments. With a strong Netherlands team as their upcoming opponents, England will need to step up their game and produce a more entertaining performance to silence their critics.

One of the major criticisms against Southgate is his reluctance to make changes to the team, with some key players not getting enough opportunities to showcase their skills. Fans are hoping to see more dynamic and proactive decisions from Southgate, especially against strong opposition like the Netherlands. If England wants to secure a convincing win and hope for a successful final, they will need to deliver a strong performance rather than relying on isolated moments of brilliance.

Despite facing criticisms and challenges, Southgate remains determined to lead his team to victory in the tournament. Fans may have tossed cups at him during a disappointing draw with Slovenia, but a potential win in the final could change their perspective. As Southgate continues to navigate the pressure and build camaraderie within the team, he remains confident in their ability to overcome challenges and ultimately achieve success.
