English bowler Martin Atkinson had a memorable match by taking five wickets as England beat Sri Lanka by 190 runs in the second Test at Lord’s. Sri Lanka, set a challenging fourth-innings winning total of 483, were dismissed for 292 despite fifties from Chandimal, Karunaratne, and captain de Silva. Atkinson, who scored his first-class hundred in England’s first innings 427, led the attack with 5-62, securing his fifth mention on the dressing room honours boards in just his second Test at Lord’s.

Joe Root also played a significant role in the victory, becoming the first England batsman to score hundreds in both innings of a Test match, setting a new record of 34 Test centuries. The win marked England’s seventh successive victory over Sri Lanka and Atkinson’s impressive performance also made him only the third Englishman to score a century and take five wickets in a Test inning after Tony Greig and Ian Botham. The game was a personal triumph for Root who led England to a convincing win.

Sri Lanka faced an uphill battle when they resumed their innings on 53-2 on the fourth day. Despite some resistance from Karunaratne and Chandimal, England’s pace attack led by Atkinson and Stone proved too strong for the visitors. Chandimal’s aggressive fifty was not enough as Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Atkinson’s five-wicket haul and Root’s exceptional batting performance sealed the victory for England, leaving Sri Lanka with little time to regroup before the third Test at the Oval.

Atkinson’s home ground at the Oval will be the setting for the final Test of the series, where Sri Lanka will look to avoid a series whitewash. The odds seem stacked against them after their defeat at Lord’s, but they will be looking to bounce back and put up a better performance. England, on the other hand, will be high on confidence after back-to-back victories and will look to continue their winning streak. The battle between the two teams promises to be an exciting one as they compete for Test supremacy.
