Arab Businesses and Human Rights Dialogue pledges to enhance efforts in implementing UN guiding principles.

The inaugural Dialogue on Business and Human Rights in the Arab Region concluded successfully in Doha, Qatar, with NHRC Chairperson H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah addressing the concluding ceremony. The event brought together various organizations and stakeholders, including the United Nations Development Programme, the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions, and UNICEF, to discuss responsible business practices in the Arab region.

During the two-day open dialogue, participants discussed integrating human rights with business interests in a sector that impacts millions in the Arab region. The Chairperson expressed gratitude to all involved in the event and highlighted the collaborative work done to identify challenges and propose solutions to enhance and safeguard human rights within the business context. The recommendations and proposals generated from the dialogue aim to contribute to a future where individuals can lead dignified and secure lives.

Recommendations made at the conclusion of the dialogue included emphasizing progress in implementing the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights in the Arab region. The dialogue also acknowledged challenges faced by states and companies in fulfilling their responsibilities to prevent and address human rights violations related to business. It was agreed to prioritize enhancing the capacity of governments, businesses, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders in the region to implement these principles.

Additionally, there was an agreement to conduct national baseline assessments and develop government action plans on business and human rights, involving diverse stakeholders from the business sector, civil society organizations, and national human rights institutions. The dialogue stressed the importance of continuing multilateral discussions on business and human rights in the Arab region and encouraged governments to strengthen efforts to implement the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

Overall, the Dialogue on Business and Human Rights in the Arab Region highlighted the importance of collaboration and collective efforts to promote responsible business practices that respect and uphold human rights. The recommendations and proposals derived from the dialogue are aimed at guiding states and companies in the Arab region towards a future where human rights are prioritized in the business context. The event served as a platform for meaningful discussions and initiatives to address challenges and enhance efforts towards ensuring human rights in business practices.
