Doha, Qatar – Seydou Sano’s dramatic stoppage-time goal secured a vital 1-0 victory for Al Gharafa SC over Al Wahda FC in their AFC Champions League group stage match yesterday. The win keeps Al Gharafa’s hopes of reaching the Elite Round of 16 alive, while Al Wahda had already qualified for the next stage. The match, played at the Thani Bin Jassim Stadium, was a tense affair marked by red cards and missed opportunities.

Al Gharafa’s win places them on six points with two matches remaining in the group stage, intensifying the competition for qualification. Al Wahda, despite the loss, remain top of the group with 13 points, having already secured their place in the knockout rounds. Meanwhile, Al Duhail suffered a setback in their campaign, losing 2-1 to Tractor FC in Iran.

Al Gharafa’s Late Push in AFC Champions League Qualification

The game began with Al Wahda asserting early pressure, with Caio Canedo testing Al Gharafa goalkeeper Khalifa Ababacar in the 12th minute. Lucas Pimenta also came close for the visitors, but Aron Gunnarsson made a crucial intervention to prevent an opening goal. Al Gharafa responded with attacking intent, Florinel Coman striking the crossbar with a powerful shot just before halftime.

The second half saw a turning point when Al Wahda goalkeeper Mohamed Al Shamsi was sent off for a foul on Coman in the 53rd minute. However, Al Gharafa failed to capitalize immediately, with Yacine Brahimi’s subsequent penalty striking the bar. The game then became even more balanced as Dame Traore received a second yellow card, reducing Al Gharafa to ten men.

Dramatic Finish at Thani Bin Jassim Stadium

Despite being a man down, Al Gharafa continued to press for a winner. Substitute Joselu came close in the 77th minute, but his effort was cleared by Sasa Ivkovic. The breakthrough finally arrived in added time, with Joselu heading a corner towards Gunnarsson, who laid the ball off for Sano to fire home the decisive goal.

The match was a physical contest, with both teams demonstrating a strong desire to win. The sending-offs significantly impacted the flow of the game, forcing both sides to adjust their strategies. This football match highlighted the competitive nature of the Asian Champions League.

Al Duhail Face Uphill Battle After Tractor FC Defeat

In Tabriz, Iran, Al Duhail’s hopes of progressing were dealt a blow by a late turnaround from Tractor FC. Benjamin Bourigeaud had given Al Duhail the lead from the penalty spot, but Shojae Khalilzadeh equalized for the hosts in the 51st minute. Amirhossein Hosseinzadeh then scored a stoppage-time winner to secure a 2-1 victory for Tractor FC.

Tractor FC’s win confirms their qualification to the Round of 16, leaving Al Duhail under pressure to secure results in their remaining matches. The defeat raises questions about Al Duhail’s form and their ability to compete with the top teams in the competition. This result adds further intrigue to the Qatar football scene.

The final round of group stage matches will be crucial for both Al Gharafa and Al Duhail. Al Gharafa needs positive results in their remaining fixtures to have a chance of advancing, while Al Duhail must improve their performance to avoid elimination. The outcome of these matches will determine which Qatari clubs will continue their journey in the AFC Champions League.

The next matches are scheduled for the coming weeks, with the exact dates and opponents to be confirmed by the AFC. Fans will be closely watching to see if Al Gharafa can maintain their momentum and if Al Duhail can recover from their recent setback. The qualification scenarios remain complex, and the final standings are still far from certain.
