Bahrain medical associations reactivated to boost specialist care

Dr. Maram Eissa Al-Sharbeti, secretary-general of the Bahraini Medical Association, confirmed on Tuesday that the association has moved to reactivate specialist groups across the kingdom, including the newly enabled Neurological Sciences Society. The announcement, made in Manama, comes as part of a broader effort to strengthen clinical networks and professional standards within Bahrain medical associations.

The reactivation phase has so far seen 13 specialty medical societies restored to active status, association officials said. Work is underway to enable four additional societies soon, with the total expected to reach 17 active specialty groups under the association’s umbrella.

What the reactivation covers and immediate objectives

The current campaign targets dedicated societies across multiple disciplines, officials explained. The immediate goals are to unify clinical expertise, formalize institutional collaboration, and coordinate regular professional activities that directly improve the delivery of care.

According to the secretary-general, the initiative will prioritize activities that demonstrate measurable benefits for patients, including standardized clinical guidelines, regular continuing medical education, and coordinated awareness campaigns directed at the public. Therefore, the reactivation aims to move beyond informal networks and toward structured, accountable specialty bodies.

New specialty societies to be brought online

The Bahraini Medical Association confirmed the Neurological Sciences Society as one of the recently reactivated groups. Additionally, association leaders said they are actively preparing to enable four further societies covering rheumatology, plastic surgery, critical care, and respiratory medicine.

When these four are completed, officials expect the total number of active specialty societies to reach 17. Meanwhile, association representatives said that formal bylaws, membership criteria, and leadership elections will be prioritized to ensure each society can operate independently while coordinating with national health priorities.

How the move aligns with national health and sustainable development goals

Association officials framed the reactivation as complementary to Bahrain’s broader development objectives and commitments to sustainable health systems. They stated that boosting specialty medical societies can help raise the overall quality of care and support a resilient workforce.

Furthermore, the initiative is intended to strengthen national capacity by enabling knowledge transfer, specialty training, and locally led research. In this way, the association suggested the effort contributes to a sustainable health system built on innovation and efficient use of resources.

Coordination with institutions and training programs

Officials said the societies will work more closely with hospitals, academic institutions, and regulatory bodies to align competency development and credentialing. Therefore, clinicians can expect more frequent workshops, specialist conferences, and targeted training programs that support clinical practice and patient safety.

Expected benefits for healthcare quality and professionals

Reactivating specialty medical societies is intended to yield multiple benefits for patients and clinicians alike. According to the association, coordinated societies can accelerate the adoption of best practices, reduce variation in care, and increase access to specialist-led services across the kingdom.

For physicians, the societies are designed to provide structured forums for peer review, mentorship, and career development. Furthermore, organized specialty groups can more effectively advocate for resources, equipment, and policy changes that reflect clinical realities on the ground.

Engagement plans: conferences, outreach and public education

Association leaders said they plan to resume regular conferences and workshops to facilitate experience exchange among physicians. They also outlined intentions to launch targeted public awareness campaigns on priority health topics, which officials believe will improve prevention and early diagnosis.

In addition, the societies will be tasked with producing educational materials for both professionals and patients, and coordinating community-level initiatives that complement national public health programs.

Governance, timelines and next steps

Officials indicated that establishing governance structures and formal membership processes is already underway for the remaining societies. The association expects the activation process to conclude in the near term, at which point all 17 specialty groups will operate under agreed terms of reference.

Observers should watch for announcements regarding launch dates for the four pending societies and scheduled national conferences. Meanwhile, the association said it will publish meeting schedules and membership guidelines to enable clinician participation.

Conclusion and what to watch next

The reactivation of specialist groups represents a coordinated push by the Bahraini Medical Association to strengthen specialty care and professional collaboration. Over the coming weeks, stakeholders will monitor the formal launch of the four remaining societies and the first round of organized events that follow.

Readers should look for official timelines from the association and updates on upcoming conferences, training sessions, and public awareness activities that are expected to roll out as the societies become fully operational.
